Corinthiahn pays men to take the body of the girl away and dispose of it. She saw his son. He never intended to heal her.
Daydelis pretends to be asleep. Eyes closed, he imagines his father knocking on the door and taking him and his mother out of this awful city, somewhere beautiful. He summons forth his hazy toddler memories of his father, trying to pick out any features he can that will help him recognize him when he finally sees him again. He remembers playing with his father's long, dark red hair.
Corinthiahn's second-born child, oldest son now that Diederich is dead, dreams about Daydelis again. He's trying to choke the child, but the child won't die. And his older brother is standing over him, laughing that hateful laugh.
