Chords Search in Carnatic Notation

Apr 09, 2005 12:39

One of the major problems I see with people who learn Carnatic is their confusion about "absolute pitch" in Western and hence the lack of enthusiasm or motivation to try out 'chords'. So I wrote this Chords Search with Carnatic Notations.

some chords theory classes, western notation vs carnatic notation and... some rants )

search, geek, carnatic

ya. its quite a problem i think. i mean, i usually tune my sa to d sharp. during the winter now, its at d because i dont like my strings held too tightly, i need room to slide and pull. ...

The idea of 'kattai' is amazing. Its quite flexible. For singers, even more! I heard that some female singers start at something like 6 kattai and as they grow old, they end up in 2 kattai or somesuch. and then there is this _really_ cute voice that sings along with them (vocal support) at the same kattai but in the next octave... it sounds soooo... sexy! D K Pattammal has this really sexy vocal support voice singing with her. Do you know who is the vocal support for D.K.Pattammal?

similarly, have you heard any of the later songs sung by M S Subbulakshmi? She sings at a low kattai with 'Radha Vishwanath' doing that sexy-voice thing! ooohhhh...

sexy voice? indian? eww...

haha jk. you mean low and husky or something? i should try to listen to some.. its hard to get good carnatic music here. all indian stores only have movie music, which sucks. i usually go to www.musicindiaonline.com for everything. its pretty good, thought its bharatnatyam section is quite limited.

i really dont like it when old women sing in that fake voice. it sounds like a chubby doll. very soft and bleh. is that what you're talking about?

No no! I meant the sexy-voice of Radha Vishwanath... She must be 30-something... her voice sounds like 19-something. You get the idea :)

you mean low and husky or something?

No, I mean the combination of low-and-husky (the old woman) _and_ this sexy voice (high-and-unhusky :D) makes it sound good overall.

Let me know if you need yem-pee-threez. I can give you some :)

Hi Sunson!
I do check out blogs randomly. Very interesting and enlightening blogs!
Just wanted to add a tit-bit in this thread regarding 'husky and unhusky' singing.
Have you listened to D.K.Jayaraman's songs? They are just too good in this aspect. I mean, a female voice singing in a higher octave accompanies him. I love the 'Shree Kaalahastheesha' (Huseni) song in one of his cassettes.
If you get hold of 'Gems of Dikshitar-Sung by Top artistes', you cant miss this song in that.
Try listening to that..and keep blogging!

I have only one D.K.Jayaraman song :-< and thats 'Mayamma' (Ahiri). It is said that if you sing ahiri, you won't get food. :D

Sure will do. Thanks for the info :)

haha, note the ":D" smiley near what I said... I don't believe in all that anyway :)

I think it is said so becoz Ahiri's swarasthanams are very much similar to Natabhairavi and Thodi (I m not very sure on this) and it needs real expertise to sing Ahiri without getting confused with Natabhairavi/Thodi.

Could be... very difficult to sing (and even hear at times ;) ). its a janya of hanumathodi... so you can guess how difficult it can get! Thodi itself is so damn complex!

WOW. Are these the ones from sai.aros.net? If not, I would like to 'somehow' obtain your stuff in exchange for what I have (and hopefully may interest you). I have a decent collection too :)

PS: added you as lj friend. By any chance, do you happen to be the 'karthi' on ILUG-Chennai as well?

I am in the iLugC list, but i am not an active participant in the mail discussions so chances of me being the 'karthi' will be extremely bad,
but you know what we have actually met once, in the MIT-Chennai labs. Tom introduced me to you then :) when u were in the "Debian Rocks" mood.

Ah! Avar thaana ivar! nice :)

I dont think so, I found this collection at Calypso in Bangalore and a few other places around Chennai/Trichy, were a very few in number so picked them up, my dad/mom helped me select the CDs

Great. So then I see that we have a CD-exchange about to happen :D Let me know how I can get you the CDs... (and in return how I can get the CDs from you). I can courier the CDs to you if you want (is 'mp3' okay?)
