I guess I've always thought it is a bit silly to make a declaration like that and then lock every entry indiscriminately...for entries I don't mind if anyone sees, I write them, post them publicly. If I only want some people to see what I write for a particular entry, then I make it so, and people who can't see it don't know it ever existed.
I'm saying...why do you need to declare and make every single entry "friends only?" Why not just continue posting the way you always have, lock the entries when you feel they need it..that's what it is for. Do you have multiple people who don't have a LJ reading your LJ? I guess that'd be the only case.
dude, a prof totally busted out my lj in a meeting, and not a good meeting. he pointed it out as an example of 'stress.' so i dont even want the inocuous seeming stuff out there.
i think i got confused and commented on someone else's journal by accidentimthemad1August 15 2004, 23:35:50 UTC

That's really, really horrible. Sorry that you have to lock it, but that really does seem like the only route.
*hug* Good luck. It's tedious but I think in your case it's entirely worth it.
