Funny...

To give you all an idea of the entertaining things my campers would say or do, here's an example...

One of my campers, Ben who is 10 years old, didn't want to go with our cabin group to sleep at ODC (which is what we call Outdoor Camp for short...anyhow, it's a place down the hill from main camp where the campers get a chance to "rough it" in the woods by sleeping in tents, cooking outdoors, etc.). As a joke, since we couldn't force Ben to sleep down at ODC anyways, we told him that in order for him to stay at Main Camp he had to come up with 20 good reasons why he didn't want to go to ODC. So here's what he came up with...

"Why I don't Like ODC"

1. There are too many mosquitoes.
2. One tent.
3. Mexican food.
4. I will not go.
5. There are too many Redwood trees.
6. No fun.
7. There are too many snakes with fangs.
8. Deer kicking me.
9. Hiking too long.
10. Lizard swatting me.
11. Too many bushes.
12. One creek.
13. Too many hills.
14. Too many bugs.
15. Bears biting me.
16. Hunting.
17. Moose poop on me.
18. Splinters.
19. Sharp leaf.
20. Woods.

LOL...he wrote those on a big sign, drew illustration for each one, and hung the sign up in the mess hall for everyone to see. All of the counselors were cracking up for days.

Ben was a really fun camper...he obviously had a great imagination, but he was also extremely smart...in his own way. He was one of those people with a disability who has an amazing ability...his was that he knew what every state flag in the U.S. as well as what each of the flags for every country in the world looks like and he could draw the flags or describe them to you from memory. Because of this, he enjoyed spending his time in arts and crafts drawing the state flags (he was also at camp an earlier session in the summer and drew country flags during that session) on big pieces of poster paper and would hang each of them up in the mess hall.

Some day I would like to do a study of why people with disabilities tend to have these remarkable abilities. If you haven't seen the movie "Rainman" you really should, it's a movie about a guy who has a disability but is extremely smart and knows a bunch of weird facts and can do complicated math in his head unlike most people, it really is a good movie- you all should see it! I guess I especially like that movie because it reminds me so much of my campers.
