In the morning, several families were gathered in the meeting room in the hospital. The Andersons, Evanses, and Hummels sat in chairs in a circle, though they were anxious for their sons to arrive. Natalie was a bit frustrated that the Smythes hadn’t bothered to arrive. As they were waiting, a woman showed up in the doorway. She was Hispanic; short with dark red-brown hair and big chestnut eyes. “Hello, can I help you?” Natalie asked.
“Hello,” the woman said, her Spanish accent thick. “My name is Rosalita. I am maid for Smythe family.” Her English was broken but she was earnest and kind. “I get messages. Mr. and Mrs. Smythe work so I come in their place. Little Sebastian need love and family.”
Natalie looked confused, as did the rest of the parents. She pulled Rosalita to the side and asked, “Are you close with Sebastian?”
“I raise him since he was born,” she nodded. “Sweet little boy. He need love and support.”
Natalie was skeptical, but she was inclined to believe that Rosalita was closer to Sebastian than his own parents. “Let me go talk to Sebastian, okay?” Natalie asked. “Why don’t you have a seat with the others.”
Carole smiled kindly as Rosalita walked over to sit next to her. Natalie went down the hall where the boys were staying, and she knocked on the door before entering. The four of them were sitting together watching television. “Boys? Do you feel like seeing your families?” Natalie asked.
Their eyes fixed on her for a moment, and then they turned to each other. They weren’t used to having options; most of the time orders were just barked out at them. “My parents aren’t here,” Sebastian said matter of factly.
“I’ll go when everyone else’s families are here,” Blaine said simply.
Natalie walked further into the room and asked Blaine, “You don’t want to go introduce your friends to your parents?”
“It wouldn’t be fair,” Blaine replied. “If I’m going to see my parents, everyone else should get to see theirs, too.”
Natalie sighed and then turned to look at Sebastian. “Sebastian, do you know a woman named Rosalita?” she asked.
Sebastian perked up at that, and the other three boys turned to look at him. Sebastian nodded, a smile forming on his lips. “Can you tell me who she is?” Natalie coaxed.
At first, Sebastian felt a bit embarrassed, but then he looked up at Natalie and said, “She’s our maid. She practically raised me; I love her.”
Natalie smiled. She was glad she’d taken the gamble and let Rosalita stay. Maybe the woman would be more beneficial to Sebastian’s healing than his parents would. Natalie made a note to see Sebastian after the group treatments to try to work on his parental situation, as well. She looked at the other boys and asked, “So how about it? Do you four think you can come talk to me and your parents for a bit?”
They exchanged glances and then slowly began to nod together. Natalie smiled and gestured towards the door. “They’re very excited to see you boys. Are they allowed to hug you?” she asked.
Kurt nodded. He’d never outgrow a hug from his father. The rest nodded, as well, and Natalie was glad she wouldn’t have to run interference when they entered the room. “There are spots for each of you by your parents. I’d like you to sit by them. We’re all going to sit in a circle so you can see each other and don’t have to worry, okay?” Natalie explained as they walked down the hall.
The boys looked nervous but didn’t run or argue. She took that as a good sign and slowly opened the door to the conference room. All at once, it was a flurry of bodies and emotion. Bur t swept Kurt up into a hug before anyone had time to think, and Blaine’s parents walked towards him quickly. Sam’s mother burst into tears all over again as she swept him up into her arms, and Rosalita was in tears as well as she walked forward to hug Sebastian. He was surprised to see her, but so thankful that he had someone to hug, just like everyone else. There wasn’t a single dry eye in the room among the parents, and when Natalie finally managed to get everyone to sit down, at least five minutes had passed.
Once everyone was sitting, she noticed the way the boys kept glancing between each other. They were very protective of each other, she noted. “How about I introduce myself before we get going?” Natalie asked, breaking the ice. “My name is Natalie Harper, and I’m a licensed psychiatrist. I’m here to help with the adjustment back into free life. I’ve been practicing for five years and have worked with many cases like this across the country,” she explained. “I have a husband and a little baby girl, and she’s one year old. I like to read books and go for bike rides.” Natalie wanted to keep everything as relaxed as possible. “I’d like to start with the boys explaining what happened to them. Sebastian? Could you start us out?”
Sebastian looked a little uncomfortable and his eyes shifted to look at everyone in the circle before he said, “Well… we were kidnapped. We went to the Lima Bean and then the next thing I know, we were in that room.”
“Blaine?” Natalie said as she turned to look at him. “Can you tell us what room Sebastian is talking about?”
Now it was Blaine’s turn to look a little uncomfortable. “Well… it was a room. It looked kind of like a hotel room. There was a big, comfy bed and a huge bathroom next to it,” he shrugged. “We had a couch, too. It was really cool.”
Natalie tried to keep her worry from showing at that statement. “Sam? Can you tell us what you boys did in that room?” Natalie asked.
Sam shrugged. “We hung out. We couldn’t leave because the door was locked and we’d get electrocuted if we touched it,” Sam told them all. “We slept there, and ate there, and they made us have sex.”
“Made you have sex?” Natalie pressed for more information.
Sam nodded and said, “Yeah. They said they’d kill us if we didn’t have sex. Or they threatened to hurt us if we disobeyed.”
“Did you guys disobey?” Natalie questioned.
None of the boys spoke for a moment. Their parents looked worried, and the boys didn’t want to reveal Kurt’s secret. “I did,” Kurt said seriously. “I made Sebastian and Blaine stop because I thought they were getting hurt, but it turned out they weren’t.”
“What happened when you disobeyed, Kurt?” Natalie asked.
Kurt was staring down at his hands and he had to stop himself from running over to one of the other boys. He was nervous and the memories were upsetting to him. “They brought us to the basement,” Kurt said softly. “They had lots of toys down there. Machines and stuff. And they were really rough and mean.”
Natalie was recording so the court would have a testimony without causing the boys trauma. Repeating these memories over and over again would only hurt them more. “What did they do to you, Kurt?” she asked.
Kurt let out a dry sob and stared down at his hands. “They left us there with machines,” Sebastian offered bravely. “We don’t know how long, but it felt like hours.”
“Did it hurt?” Natalie asked.
“After a while,” Sam spoke up. “But you couldn’t really stop it, you know? We couldn’t get away so we just had to take it. We came over and over again, so much that it hurt.”
Nobody spoke for a moment. The realization of how rough the boys had it was very hard to hear. “Kurt had it worst out of all of us,” Blaine said softly. “They let us go before they let Kurt go. They kept him and did more to him. He even bled a little.”
Burt looked like he was completely on the defense. He really wanted to have someone punished for making his son bleed. “How did they make you bleed, Kurt?” Natalie asked, turning to watch him specifically.
Kurt whimpered and his reply was barely audible. “They used their fist. Hard.”
Burt was absolutely livid but Natalie’s look in his direction told him to calm down. Kurt was wiping tears from his eyes as he looked up bravely and added, “But Blaine, Sebastian, and Sam took care of me afterwards. I’m okay now.”
The session continued on with Natalie asking questions about what specifically the boys remembered doing, and what they did in their time off. It was strange for them, having someone take such an interest in them and what they were doing. Then she got towards the conversation that made them all feel a little bit awkward. “Kurt, can you tell me what you want to do now that you’re out of there, back in your normal life?” Natalie asked.
Kurt looked up at Natalie in confusion. Burt and Carole and everyone else had their attention fixed on him. “I want to live with them,” Kurt replied, looking at Sam, Sebastian, and Blaine. “I don’t want to leave them. I love them.” Kurt looked a bit worried and a little panicked when he thought about what might happen. “Please don’t take them away from me,” he said sadly, his voice cracking as he spoke.
“Kurt, they’ll be living right in town,” Carole said sweetly.
“Yeah, you guys can hang out all the time,” Burt added.
Kurt looked over at them, appalled. “It’s not the same,” he said simply. “I want to live with them. Like we were before. I want to share my bed with them, and sleep with them, and I want to love them.”
Natalie could sense a near panic attack, so she spoke up and said, “Kurt, calm down, okay? You four are going to be staying in your room here a little longer. No need to panic.”
“I want to stay with them, too,” Sam said bravely.
“Me too,” Sebastian added.
“Me too,” Blaine chimed in.
The parents all turned to look at Natalie in concern, and she slowly nodded. “We’ll figure out a way for you all to be happy and back to your normal lives, okay?” she said softly. “Now, how about we all hang out in here today? I thought we could play some games and catch up. I’m sure you’re all wondering what your parents have been doing since you boys left.”
Natalie looked at them all with a slight smile, but the boys looked apprehensive. They weren’t so sure they wanted to go through that. “Can’t we just go cuddle?” Blaine asked hopefully.
“I’d like you guys to play some games first, please,” Natalie coaxed them.
Blaine looked a little put out, but the boys managed to concede and play some games with their families. Sebastian and Rosalita played checkers, Kurt and his parents played Sorry!, Sam and his parents played Go Fish, and Blaine played chess with his dad. Natalie stood back and talked to the police officers that were out of uniform to keep the boys from panicking. She handed over the tape recorder to them and explained that the boys would need to stay for a few more days, at least, but probably more depending on how quickly they could break their co-dependency.
After the games, the boys were allowed to go back to their room. Spending two hours out of each other’s grasps had been quite an achievement for them, Natalie acknowledged. After the boys were back in their hospital room, Natalie had the parents stay after for a little debriefing. “Thank you all for coming to this session today. Tomorrow we’re going to separate them from each other for some one-on-one sessions with me, and then the following day we’d love to have a full family session. We’re going to try for several hours apart just like we did today. However, I think we should also begin discussing options for their living situation after their hospital stay,” Natalie explained. “Now naturally I’m sure you all would like to just bring your boys home with you. I fear it won’t be that simple. There is the option to put them in observed housing, which would be on a month by month basis. Take some time tonight to discuss how you feel about the boys being housed there together for at least a month while we work on breaking some of these tighter bonds.”
The parents looked skeptical but nodded. Natalie smiled and said, “Your boys are in great care, and they’re already making great strides towards being healed.”
“Yeah, well, they’re not all I’m worried about,” Burt replied gruffly. “That man that put them through that deserves punishment. All the men do.”
“The police are hard at work on the case, and they’ll call you with the court date as soon as it’s settled upon,” she said encouragingly. “There’s nothing to worry about, Mr. Hummel, I assure you.”
Burt nodded but looked disbelieving. The parents slowly dispersed and back in the room, the boys were having a conversation of their own. “I don’t want to leave you guys,” Kurt said sadly, tears welling in his eyes. “We can’t let our parents do that to us.”
“Natalie is the one that wants to split us up,” Sebastian said bitterly.
Blaine rubbed Kurt’s back and said, “Nobody is going to split us up. I love you guys and that love isn’t going anywhere.”
Sam nodded seriously, reaching out instinctively for Sebastian’s hand. Natalie observed through the doorway on her way out and quickly her mind began coming up with a plan to try to make the boys’ transition back into normal life easier. She just hoped her instincts were correct.
