Day 18: Thursday, August 14, 2008
Dartmouth, NS to Dover-Foxcroft, ME

Daryl woke me up out of a deep sleep by knocking a pop can on the bedside table with his elbow and then I couldn't go back to sleep (see why I ban pop in the bedroom?). I uploaded pics and updated my LJ and then had a nice long, hot shower. It was so nice to have the water drain! Such luxury! We packed up and were on our way by about 10. It took us just over 2 hours to get to the New Brunswick border (up by Amhearst where we first entered NS after PEI) during which time I slept. We randomly came across a toll section of the highway which was surprising because normally the TomTom warns us of those things. We busted through New Brunswick with very few stops as the weather was still cloudy. When we stopped at a McDonalds for lunch, we were blown away that there was a French couple in there who couldn't speak any English. It was sad (and mildly funny) to watch the staff mime out things. I can't believe there are people in Canada who don't know enough English to order a meal at McDonalds. Seriously. And if you don't, wtf are you doing leaving your cardboard box? Or Quebec. Yet another reason why I see no reason to ever visit Quebec. We changed drivers at the same rest stop that we went to when we first got to New Brunswick and I drove across the border again. It was much busier this time and the border guards were veru thorough. I've never been interigated as much as we were today. She even went so far to ask how we'd met the people we were visiting in Ohio. Who cares?? I was just worried that she was going to ask if we had any food (cause we did and I didn't declare it) but all she cared about was tobacco and alcohol (again, who in their right mind would buy alcohol in Canada and bring it down to the States?? Everything is WAY cheaper down here!). We entered Maine and went down the lonely highway again. Northern Maine is so rural and unpopulated - very similar to parts of the interior of BC - just forests everywhere. We got off the main road and headed towards the State Park that we had decided to stay at. It was WAY inland and we were worried that we wouldn't find a grocery store to get some food for dinner at. We found a local grocer in Dover-Foxcroft and got some corn and stuff (since I figure there won't be any corn left when I get home) and then went to Peaks-Kenny State Park. We signed in and found out that there were supposedly only 3 campsites left! Weird cause when we took a walk around after dinner, over ½ of the campground was empty. I think the guy had the wrong day's reservation list out and was looking at Friday. We have very nice and quiet site and a babbling brook runs next to it. It's lovely now but I think it might cause some problems during the night! We cooked an awesome dinner, did the dishes and went for a walk down to the lake. Sebec Lake was absolutely gorgeous and the water was like glass. Unfortunately it was dusk but we got a couple of shots of the sunset. They had a playground there and so I played on it. We also found a swingset and laughed so hard because everytime we did a pass, it felt like the whole structure was going to come tumbling down. It didn't break, thank goodness. However, there was NO ONE around and the next thing we know, there is a little boy coming running down the hill towards the playground. Why do kids always insist on playing on things that I am already on?? He had no parents or anyone with him - it was really weird. He got bored quickly though and left us alone. It got too dark to see so we went back to our campsite. Daryl had a shower and I fell asleep at 8:50!!!

I get bored during long drives and unfortunately, Daryl often suffers. Fortunately, he's a good sport about getting his hair done!
