Day 13: Saturday, August 9, 2008
Summerside, PEI
We had a bit of a sleep-in this morning and didn't get up until 8:30. I'm still dreaming weird things about teaching in September - hopefully none of them come true! We left at 9:30 and were half-way to Charlottetown when we realized that I'd forgotten my rings in the bathroom at the motel. We had to turn around so it ended up costing us about 40 minutes! Oops! We were eventually back on our way again to explore the eastern side of the Island and do the Points East Coastal Drive. Our first stop was the community of Alexandra and I even found a street there named after me! The weather was the pits this morning with lots of rain and dark clouds. We weren't sure how enjoyable our drive would be but it did start to clear up as the day wore on. We went down a dirt road to Point Prim and found another lighthouse - the island is covered with them! This one was PEI's oldest lighthouse and the only one made of brick. You can tell which ones are the 'newer' ones (built after 1873) because they are square and the older ones are octagonal. We checked out Wood Islands which is where the ferry from Nova Scotia comes in but it was too wet to stay out for long. We next went to Cape Bear to see another lighthouse - this one was the first to receive and forward the Titanic's distress signal. We then went to Murray River and from there cut up to Montague to get some lunch. On to Georgetown where we found a cool wooden train for me to play on. We would have played longer but some kid came running down the hill to join us so it lost all its fun. Why do kids always insist on ruining my fun? We then went to Souris and all the way up to East Point which is the most eastern part of PEI. It was amazing up there! There were quite a few tourists there but we were still able to hike down and find some picturesque places. We started to run out of time so we couldn't continue down the northeastern coast and instead took the highway down the centre. It was much faster but the scenery was not as nice. We got back to Summerside at 6:30 and Daryl really wanted to go and watch another couple of ball games so we did. We came back at 10 and watched the Olympic games until way too late! Tomorrow we are off to Nova Scotia!

Daryl was stoked to find his name on a sign today too!

Don't do it Daryl!
East Point.
This is a real pic - it just looks like I put Daryl in front of giant postcard.
My favourite pic of the trip.
