Day 8: Monday, August 4, 2008
New Albany, OH to Albany, NY
We woke up this morning at 6:30 because Mario had said everyone was going to leaving early. Well, things were a little behind schedule so I was able to shower and pack up before having to say goodbye to them all. We left a few things behind at their place that we didn't want to have to take across the border just yet. We closed up the house and left just after 8:30. We were both exhausted so we took turns driving while the other slept. We crossed into Pennsylvania and then into New York. We decided to take the toll highways in order to save time and they were pretty reasonable. We had lunch in Batavia, which was a cute little New York town. Then we headed back to the toll highway. The neat thing about the toll highway is that, since you can't get off and on them in the same way you can on other highways (without having to go through toll booths), every 50 miles or so, they have a service plaza with a gas station and restaurants. The first ones were packed with people of all shapes and sizes but they cleared out as the evening wore on. We finally go to Albany, NY at about 7:30 and checked into a motel for $60. After a quick nap, Daryl wanted some food so we drove downtown. Albany has some amazing buildings but there are lots of black people everywhere, perpetuating stereotypes by hanging out on their front steps in large groups or walking around in wife beaters. We drove through some sketchy areas but were fine - the police pressence down there was quite impressive. And it's a Monday night. Today was an uneventful day as right now we are just driving as fast as we can to the Maritimes. We were in bed by 11:30.

Me at one of the service plazas. We really didn't do anything cool today to take pictures of. Sorry!
