Day 3 - Brooks, AB to Fort Qu-appelle, SASK

Aug 06, 2006 09:09

I woke up at 7 this morning and decided to have a shower before anyone else got up. I ended up having a beautifully hot and long shower in total peace, in what seemed like my own private bathroom! It was very refreshing! When I got back to the tent, Daryl was up and packing stuff up so ended up being on the road by about 8. We got to the Saskatchewan border in no time and of course took pictures. I really like Saskatchewan - it's not as flat as people make it out to be and most of it is just beautiful. I did not get bored at all! We stopped in Swift Current for lunch and it was a really beautiful city. We saw most of it as we went on a little detour through the downtown area looking for someplace to get some lunch. We drove on and stopped at a bird sanctuary on a big but shallow lake/pond and climbed up a lookout tower and took some pictures. We then drove on, looking for a town to fill up on gas because we were VERY low - unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of towns in Saskatchewan so when we pulled into Caronport, we were very relieved to see a Husky station there. We drove around and looked at Briercrest Bible College where a couple of my friends from high school spent a year and found out that Caronport contains pretty much the Bible College and nothing else. We then stopped in Moosejaw and took a picture of the giant moose - it was hilarious!!! From Moosejaw to Regina took no time - we were going to stop at the Legislative Buildings for lunch but then we remembered that it was Sunday and of course a government building would not be open! We got to Regina, which Daryl said reminded him of Langley because of all the big box stores. I retorted with "Langley doesn't leave that much grass around it's big box stores!". On the other side of Regina, we headed northeast towards Fort Qu-appelle, which is supposedly named so because an Indian guy thought someone was calling his name. We were aiming for Echo Valley Provincial Park and we got there at about 3. Good thing because there were only three camping spots left! We paid for one and then $3 for a campfire permit which gave us unlimited access to firewood! The only sucky thing was that they had high firepits so you couldn't make a big bon fire. After setting up, we headed down to Pasqua and Echo Lakes which were just beautiful and quite quiet considering it was the Sunday of a long weekend. I guess the $7 entry fee turns people off. We came back after walking the shoreline for but and found that there was a carnival going on in the park. Unfortunately it was just ending - I was disappointed cause I wanted some cotton candy! :) We went back to the campsite and started cooking dinner. I tried Nick's method of wrapping stuff in tinfoil and it worked beautifully! I had chicken and veggies and a baked potato - very yummy!!  Daryl had chicken caesar wraps and then, as were were doing dishes, I drank some soapy water for $20. I had to spend some time in the tent  because I didn't feel very well afterward. I'm an idiot but I can't resist a dare! After a bit, Daryl and I walked down to the lookout point over the two lakes - it was breath-taking especially because the sun was setting. The campsite was really loud and the girls in the site behind us were very giggly and it got extremely annoying!!

Picture time!

Welcome to Saskatchewan!!!
