The hushed voices and tiptoeing around annoys Sam even more than Cutter’s pained expression, as if he was the only one who lost Stephen, so she pulls and pushes everyone, driving the dagger deeper in every wound, watching them crumble in front of her eyes. And they let her, silently acknowledging her right to hurt, and she hates it, because somehow this irrevocably proves that Stephen is not coming back. And when Abby finally bites back (“Have you even cried yet?”) Sam in her surprised, angry relief can’t say anything but the truth: “Tommy cries enough for both of us.”
