By the time the fourth huge box of books was packed and dragged down to Stephen’s car he was cursing the fact that Allison was such a big reader and his own bad luck at being the one to help her move into her new flat. Ever so perceptive, Allison flashed him one of her warm, bright smiles and suggested a break and tea. The familiar routine of making tea together made Stephen smile to himself - he did miss the ease of being with her.
“So,” Allison flung herself on the kitchen counter and blew at her hot tea. “Am I ever going to hear about this new job of yours?”
        “Well, it’s challenging and exciting...”
“Must be if it got you hospitalized the first week,” Allison laughed but Stephen could tell there was a hint of worry behind it.         “But it must be better than being stuck at University. You know, I never understood why someone with your talents for real field work would settle for that dull position - no wait I know exactly why I just don’t know how Nick bloody Cutter could be worth it.”
“I may have accidentally told one of the girls I’m working with that I’m dating you.”
Allison blinked, amusement tugging at her lips.
“Well, that’s an interesting non sequitur, Mr Hart,” she said but she must have been in a generous mood and didn’t force Stephen to discuss Nick further. “Strictly speaking it’s not a lie. We did date a while back.”
“Yeah, in the Triassic, millions of years ago,” Stephen smiled and Allison chuckled. Then he added quietly: “Those were good times.”
“Yeah. It was nice - well, until you started fucking Cutter’s wife and got all secretive and weird.”
There was no hurt in Allison’s voice but the words still punched Stephen in the gut.
        “Sorry...”
“Don’t be, that’s not why I said it,” Allison said soothingly. “Besides, we always worked better as friends, don’t you think?”
“True,” Stephen nodded. He would never say this to her but he had missed Allison a lot while she was gone.
“So this girl at work’s got the hots for you, then?”
“Abby, she’s called Abby... I don’t really know, maybe.”
“Come on, Stephen,” Allison laughed. “You just need to walk into a room and everybody falls over their own feet.”
        Stephen shrugged.
“Not everybody,” he said quietly into his mug.
“Well, I always thought nothing short of a living-breathing dinosaur could wrestle an erection out of Nick Cutter.”
Stephen almost chocked on his tea at the words and was coughing for long moments. Allison patted him on the back a couple of times with a devilish grin.
“Right, back to work,” Stephen said once he got his breath back. “I need to get that highly disturbing image out of my head. Thank you for that.”
        Allison smirked. “Anytime.”
