thought the notebook Abby burned was her own, as Sarah had Helen's, I think.
Yep, I paused on that scene, and it looks like she had taken down a ton of field notes, presumably for the sake of cataloging everything when they got back. Her tossing them in the fire was her letting go of hope that they could return.
Interesting reaction. I also think the writing has improved, but had the opposite reaction in that I thought the dialogue excellent and the plotting non-existent. I love the fact Becker now has a character, and Lester was perfect. However, I dislike both Matt and Jess. (Though I admit that my dislike of the former has something to do with a personal dislike of people who get by on charm, and the latter is so badly realised in contrast with similar female geeks in Criminal Minds and NCIS.)
I'll be particularly interested in what you make of Episode 2.
I thought the notebook was Helen's at first, but that was back with Sarah (wondewred what happened to it, or did it die with her?) Ican't see myself writing the new characters for a while yet, but I really enjoyed the ep. Becker was enormously improved, Lester was a awesome as ever, and it was great to see Abby and Connor again.
I kind of liked Matt and Jess, but I'm still pining for Cutter a bit. Well, more than a bit, actually. But I didn't find that getting in the way of my enjoyment, as unlike last time, I knew he wasn't going to be there. That made it oddly easier. And Burton and Gideon were intriguing.
Liked it a whole lot more than most of S3, I have to say.
I'm not sure if it's better written, plotwise, but they're certainly paying more attention to the way the audience is likely to feel about the characters and what's happened in the past. I'm looking forward to developments.

I think the character I liked the least was Jess, and I'm not keen on the idea of UST with Becker.
