summary: Glimpse into the beginning of Klaus and Stefan’s road trip

more of this universe - Klaus left Mystic Falls with Stefan and a newly turned Jenna and he enjoys breaking his new toys

The way Klaus is slouching in the passenger seat reminds Stefan of Damon and he grabs the wheel harder. The silence is tearing at his mind. They’ve been on the road for three days now and Klaus still hasn’t given him even a hint of where they are going, what they are looking for. It makes Stefan feel completely at Klaus’ mercy, which was probably the point in the first place, and knowing that only makes Stefan feel more on edge.
“Let’s play a game,” he suddenly says and it’s enough to finally make Klaus look up. “Since bonding seems to be the only purpose of this road trip.”
The small smile playing in the corner of Klaus’ mouth makes it obvious he knows Stefan is fishing but he doesn’t seem to mind. He shifts in his seat slightly.
“What did you have in mind?”
“I’ll answer any questions you might have and in return you answer some of mine.”
Klaus smiles to himself, as if amused by a child’s funny words.
“You forget, Stefan, I could easily make you answer all my questions.”
Stefan knows, of course, but the hunger makes him slow, and Klaus must know that. Ever since they started out on this journey Stefan has been kept on a tight leash, only allowed a mouthful of blood every now and then, barely enough to keep him sane now that he’s gotten so used to indulging the monster inside.
“I’ll tell you what,” Klaus seems to take pity on him. “I’m bored. So, surprise me. Every time you do something I don’ see coming, you get to ask a question.”
Stefan doesn’t answer but all of a sudden takes a sharp turn and breaking the guard-rail drives the car off the road, down the rocky slope; soon he loses control and it turns over several times before coming to a sudden stop at the bottom of the slope. Stefan stays motionless for a few seconds until the pain in his body subsides and the broken bones heal. The car is upside down and squashed, and it takes more than human strength to pry open the door. As he’s crawling out of the wreckage Stefan can hear Klaus do the same. He drags himself in safe distance from the car and lies on his back in the grass. Klaus joins him and props himself up on his elbow, a smile on his face.
“Well, I must admit, I wasn’t expecting such an explosive answer.”
“Then you will answer any question I ask?”
Klaus smiles down at him, the sun playing hide and seek in his hair.
“Strictly speaking no obligation to answer was part of our deal but I’m in a generous mood today, so I will answer any question worth answering.”
Stefan licks his lips and looks at the sky instead of Klaus as he speaks.
          “Why did you kill Caroline?”
          There is a pause.
“That is your question?” Klaus sounds unimpressed.
          “Yes,” Stefan shrugs.
“I needed her to complete the sacrifice, you know that,” Klaus says briskly, annoyance radiating from him, clearly disappointed by Stefan’s choice of question.
“Yes, but why her? You could have turned any stranger or could have used Katherine.”
“You want a reason?” Klaus snarls. “It amused me to grant Elena’s wish and hurt her with it - her saintly guilt is her only entertaining quality. Why Caroline specifically? She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time - there was no other reason, she didn’t matter. All she was, was a pawn in a game of chess and I took her. Does that satisfy your curiosity?”
Klaus stands up, his disappointment quickly shifting into anger and Stefan momentarily feels like he’s just failed some test. He gets up and stands beside Klaus, looking at the wrecked car.
          “You owe me another question.”
          Klaus turns slowly.
          “Is that so?”
          Stefan faces him.
“I take it you expected me to ask something more substantial.”
A slow smile spreads on Klaus’ features, and he looks almost proud.
“Fair enough,” he says. “But first you owe me a new car.”
