“Why are you with me?” Rebekah asks one evening, her head in Elena’s lap, the flickering TV casting a strange light on her profile. Elena’s hand that is buried deep in Rebekah’s blonde locks freezes mid-stroke. She hates that question. Hates that she’d seen in coming. Hates that it’s logical and that she doesn’t have a good answer for it.
It would be so easy if she could kiss Rebekah, look her in the eye, and say “Because I love you”. It would at least make sense of why she’s travelling across Italy, from one fancy 5 star hotel to the next with a vampire that drives her mad half of the time. But it would be a lie and Elena is sick of lies.
So she chooses the truth for once: “Because you looked at me and didn’t see Katherine.”
“Ok,” Rebekah says, as if the answer made perfect sense and she doesn’t even take her eyes off the screen, apparently more interested in Natalie Portman stripping for some British actor Elena can’t remember the name of.
So she goes back to gently stroking Rebekah’s hair and thinks that maybe it is that simple. Maybe nothing matters except her blood on Rebekah’s lips, avoiding Klaus and Stefan’s backpacking twosome, and not seeing Katherine all the time when looking into a mirror.
