Sometimes they lie together in unlit rooms, watching decades fade into history.
Her body fits against his perfectly and just for a few hours it's almost easy to believe this is everything it's not. But the first light of morning always shatters the fickle illusion of belonging together, and Damon never feels the need to watch Anna walk away from him.
They don't need each other... It's not each other they need.
Two broken halves will never make a whole.
But a few years pass and they are back in nameless hotel rooms, sucking loneliness out of each other's writhing body as if it could make everything right again. There's nothing they find in each other's aems, no hope, no love, no companionship.
And yet, the night Anna's quest ends and she's reunited with her mother, for the first time in too long Damon truly understands being alone.
