Haley pounded the door with her fist. “Open the damn door!”
“Fuck off. Go home to Tree Hill!” he spat through the door. He was staring at it, tears on the edge of his eyes.
“Open the door, or - I swear, I dunno what I’ll do to you!”
“Fine by me, just go away!”
“URGH!” The frustrated sound hitting him like a ton of bricks. He put the glass of whiskey to his lips. She was back. They’d met years ago when they were both young - she was touring, having left her husband back home in Tree Hill, and he was grieving his father. They were both in need and in pain when they had met. One intense night, they had finally made love, and he’d never forgotten. He’d been with tons of women since, not to mention Blair Waldorf had had him wrapped around her little finger. Sometimes, late at night, when he’d been with her, he’d imagined Hayley’s body, her voice, the sweet music of her signing and he’d made love to the woman in his bed.
Until tonight, he had never thought he’d see her again. And then, suddenly there she was, banging on his door for some reason that was beyond him. Okay, maybe not beyond him. He’d bought the club her husband belonged to and he’d fired him. Not a nice move, but Nathan Scott was a good player - one he didn’t want on his team. He needed the team to be the best, not good.
“OPEN UP!” she roared. “Chuck!”
He looked at the door, then at his own reflection in the mirror above the side table, right by the door. He looked good, older, mature, a businessman. He stood there, in a shirt and a pair of jeans, business casual, it was Friday after all. He looked from his own reflection to the door that rattled.
“What do you want Hayley?” he asked softly.
“Open the door and find out, you coward.”
So he did, he opened the door, and he was in no way prepared for how good she would look in reality and not through the distortion of a peephole. One look at her and all he could say was “I missed you.” Suddenly all the façade went away and he felt himself become a teenager again, young and in love with a girl who was married. Another woman who was out of his reach, just like his mother.
She smiled. “I missed you too, dummy.” She came in through the door and hugged him tight. Then she backed away and hit him over the shoulder. “Why did you fire Nathan?”
“He’s a good player, just not the best.”
She looked at him, in part disappointed, and in part knowing he was right. “No, there can only be one that’s the best.” She shook her head and stepped close to him again. She looked up into eyes that were cold on an average day. But he felt them melt under the pressure her eyes were putting on him. “And as per usual, Bass, you’re the best.”
“I loved you.” He said. He bent his head down, not kissing her but their lips so close they might just if either of them swayed the least. “I still love you.” She began to shake her head, instead their lips met and time melted away from their past.
