John woke up on the other side, head in a bandage and feeling might dizzy. “What the hell?” he mumbled, looking around the small space.
“Well, welcome back to the land of the living,” a brunette smiled.
“Where am I?” he said, leaning back on his elbows.
“San Francisco.” She didn’t even look at him.
“When am I?”
This caught her attention. She spun around and looked into his eyes, her own blazing suddenly. “Excuse me?”
“When - the date?”
She came over and sat down by him, obviously trying to keep her eyes off of his naked chest with a bit of a struggle. “You don’t need the date. But the year, am I right?”
He nodded. “Right.”
“To figure out whether it’s future or past?” she said. And he nodded again, looking at her wondering how she could possibly know.
“2002.”
He nodded, falling back on the stack of pillows and feeling his heart drop in his chest.
“So?” She looked at him, expectantly. “Past, present or future?”
“Past. Far into the past too…”
“Let’s get you out of bed and out of those jeans, I think they’re a little too… Bloody, for today’s fashion.” She smiled. It was a warm and inviting smile and John couldn’t help but smile back.
“Fine by me. And I would kill for a coffee.”
She laughed, the sound the musical equivalent of her smile looked. “Coffee it is. And maybe a stroll on the town, some fresh summer air and a bit of a tourist tour?”
He smiled. “I’ve been here before. Actually I was just there, I think…”
“So, what’s-your-name, my sister’s husband’s jeans should fit you.” And she grabbed a pair off the chair. “Here, and here.” She threw jeans and a t-shirt out of the wardrobe. He smiled.
“I’m John, by the way.”
She turned around, a hand on her hip. “John. I like that name. Nice too meet you John.”
“And you are?” She looked at him for a long moment, the smile dying down. Then her eyes lit up.
“Phoebe.”
