Physics is like sex- sure it has practical results, but that's not why we do it. -Richard P Feynman
Say that God didn't exist (God forbid). Why be "good"? Why do anything worth being remembered?
-Epicurean
-Happiness of others
-There are no absolutes (God ALWAYS might exist; define "God")
-Raised in a society that may teach us to value the good (even at cost to self). Ties into Epic., follow this.
There is no reason to be remembered. You'll die and you won't care if you're remembered or not. In life the things worth remembering sometimes bring notoriety (Austen/Gissing), sometimes no one tells you from the next guy over (Ub Iwerks). Sometimes you attach your name to something and no one remembers you even then (Waldenström).
Live it up? Why bother living it up? If this meal, this evening, this day at the beach, this bout of sex, this one "day" is all we have, shouldn't that give us all the more reason to be looking for something more? Not to be remembered (never remembered), but trying to find some kind of answer.
The answer has to be there somewhere. There doesn't look to be an absolute out there anywhere, but if we look hard enough (second star to your left and straight on till morning) maybe there is.
