Took some students to see Shakespeare (MSND)today. It was a kick-ass production in Victorian wear with the fairies acting like the cats from "Cats", and the actors were very physical. Hermia did several Judo throws during her scenes and at times, the actors ran through the audienc, which made the whole production unpredictable and fun. The stage changes from Athens to the forest were done by the fairies pulling a painted tarp over the stage as they entered. And the woman who played Titania was just amazing. I plan to go again to see the experimental version in January. And they need volunteer ushers, so I can go for free as well.
I loved doing that in my last town. I got to see everyone from Radio Tarifa (World music) to Dave Koz (jazz) to Bill T Jones/Artie Zane (dance) to Deepak Chopra to a night of Indian Rock music (that lasted past 2am), to Japanese theater and the type (can't think of the name now) where they wear the white faces and the actors can appear naked (or nearly so). That show was surreal.
This seems to be a similar place. I'm signing up this week.
