Islanded in a Stream of Narcissism

I think I have figured out why Cavil became the Evil Cylon Leader instead of just another Cylon model. It's because each side must have an egomaniacal old man in charge. "Get over it" - seriously, Adama? Seriously? Since when are you the only person allowed to grieve and take Raptors out on suicide missions? Oh, right. It is All About You. You know what, next time you're feeling down about your girlfriend and your ship dying, I will tell you to get over it. (Also, please do not have angsty metaphorical paint!sex with your ship ever again. Please. That scene was disturbing enough with Kara and Leoben; we did not need another.)

How sad is it that I'm shocked the writers remembered Baltar used to be a scientist? It was nice to see him get back to that, a bit. And then use Kara's outburst (because she couldn't bear the secret any longer and wanted to know, and Baltar's one of the only people who could help her with that, unfortunately) to place all the attention on himself and his goals! Also sad: I find Baltar much more tolerable than Adama now, because Baltar is supposed to be a narcissist. I get the feeling we're supposed to still be thinking of Adama as flawed but still the guy we want in charge. Um, no.

Also, when I think Boomer has a stronger moral center than Adama, there's a problem. She actually feels conflicted and guilty about the bad things she's done lately. He doesn't. (Her subplot is one of the few things I'm loving. Ooh, she has a chance to get vengeance on the people who killed her for something that wasn't her fault/stole her life, and maybe make life better for Cylons somehow... yet she has doubts about her leader and still loves a human or two. Yay!)

The greater presence of the Eights lately reminds me of something Adama said back in the miniseries, something which Athena reminded him of when she was still incarcerated: he asked if humans deserved to survive, and she said maybe they don't. The way the show is going, I'm starting to agree with her. (Besides, it would tie it all together so nicely.) Not that the Cylon do either. Maybe the show will end with the end of all known sentient life! I'm not sure any other show has gone that far yet - it would make television history. And in this case, some fans might be rooting for that ending...

Or maybe I'm just cranky. If you want to be cranky with me, someone has made great Adama macros. Weed: because really, it's not like your decisions could get any WORSE.
