The Letter

Jul 06, 2009 10:48

Just a little "Susan in Spare Oom" fluff written for WeeklyChallenge #11 (Unbelievable) at  justkingedmund. I had originally written this for Lucy, but switched it when I realized it was kinda OOC.

Disclaimer: Not mine; never will be. *sigh*

Susan stared at the paper in front of her with horror. It was unbelievable! How could she have been so careless? Lucy would probably giggle if she confessed; Edmund, give her a sympathetic smile; Peter, though, would be disappointed.

The assignment had seemed harmless enough: write a letter welcoming the dignitaries participating in next weeks State Visit. The person with the highest marks in each form would have their letter read aloud as part of the Welcoming Ceremony.

It was halfway through her second proof-read that Susan spotted the problem. Using the penmanship of Queen Susan the Gentle, she had crafted a beautiful message of peace & welcome somewhere between a letter & a speech (as such things were often read aloud). A note from a Sovereign to a Visiting noble. It was not the words that were the problem, but how she had used them. Like Peter on the battlefield, or Edmund in a debate, none could rival her in court etiquette.

Unfortunately, her skill with a pen was there for all to see. There was no way someone her age could have written that letter. She sighed with the knowledge that she could never hand this in. On top of everything else, she had used several traditional phrases of the Narnian Court.

A quick glance at the clock proved Susan had just enough time to rewrite it. She pulled out a fresh sheet of paper & began again. The second draft took far longer as she kept having to stop & check her work for “mistakes” as well as ensure the handwriting was that of Susan Pevensie of Finchley.

She was just signing her name when the bell rang. With a deeply satisfied sigh, Susan leaned over to grab her satchel & put away her things. Giving Mavis a quick smile of thanks for collecting her paper, she headed off to her next lesson.

Her satisfaction with the day’s events lasted until she unpacked her satchel that night. There, between her Language Arts & Arithmetic books was the second draft of her letter.

Yes, Peter was going to be quite cross.
