CHARACTER NAME: Hyuuga Hinata
FANDOM: Naruto
CANON: Chapter 488
WHAT THEY LOST: Her memories of Team 8 (Team Kurenai). Yuuhi Kurenai, the jounin in-charge of the team, has been watching over Hinata since she graduated from the academy. She has been a consistent believer and supporter and been like an older sister to Hinata. Kurenai has always encouraged Hinata to do her best and done all she could to help Hinata in her goal of changing herself. While her two teammates, Inuzuka Kiba and Aburame Shino, have been her best and (presumed) only friends. They love and look out for her as if she was a little sister, and they, too, have always done their best to support her in their own ways. After the childhood Hinata had, these three people were the only ones who truly tried to help her and support her, and they cared about her just the way she was.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Hinata is a very kind and shy person: soft-spoken and quiet. Also, she is a timid person who dislikes conflict and does her best to avoid it. Because of this, she is also quite empathetic: easily understanding and identifying with the pain others feel. She also has something of a small stubborn streak, though many would not guess it. On the flip-side of this, she is lacking in self-confidence and is not too revealing about her real feelings on matters or people. Because of her lack of self-confidence, she usually fails missions or whatever it is she is doing. Though she has become more assertive, these traits still linger. She does realize that she is a kind and shy person, but believes them to be negative traits instead of positive traits. And she does know she is lacking in self-confidence, which is why she tries so hard to correct it. Nor does she see herself as stubborn, but more hard-working, which is also what others see as well. Hinata relates very well to other people, as she is very empathetic. This makes her a good friend, definitely a confidant, that one can talk to about anything as she will make a huge effort to understand and sympathize with what they're going through. To a certain degree, she is a pacifist--she dislikes fighting and will do her best to avoid it, but if she has no other choice, she will give her all in a fight. Especially if the fight is about or the enemy is after Naruto. He is a major part of her life, even when looking at just the platonic admiration from the beginning. Needless to say, Naruto and her clan are the most important things to her; Naruto slightly more so.
Her motivations are all about being acknowledged and about changing. She wants to be acknowledged by her father, by her clan, and by Naruto; the ways in which she is acknowledge differ, though: as a competent daughter, ninja and heiress, and as a person. Her purpose is to change herself through hard work, which she has been working at and succeeding at, seen as she will speak up about things she believes in or cares about, even going so far as to confess her love to Naruto. Another long term goal she has that is more than a little hinted at is that she wants to change her clan and foster better relations between the main and branch family. Though she is gentle, she has been in the world of clan politics her entire life. She possibly views them as distasteful and shady, but she does seem to possess some knowledge of clan and political etiquette being an heiress. And she knows it is necessary, and is prepared to navigate it. And as a traditional person, she does have a sense of morality and of following the rules laid out--specifically the shinobi rules and her nindo--though she can and will break them as necessary.
As for idiosyncrasies, she does have a habit of blushing a lot. She will also spend a lot of time trying to say what she means, interjecting, "Um," at times because she is unsure and lacking in self-confidence. And she will often twiddle her fingers or wring them while talking or if she is uncomfortable. Her favorites food are dishes such as red bean soup and cinnamon rolls, while she dislikes most dishes with seafood, such as crab and shrimp. She spends her free time pressing flowers, which shows that she enjoys taking small, almost insignificant things and using them to create a much bigger picture.
Her background is rather spotty (especially since I'm using the manga version). But she was born as the heiress to the Hyuuga Main Family, and would one day inherit it. When she turned three, all members of the Branch Family who were unmarked with the jutsu that would seal their eyes at death and marked them as servants were marked, including her cousin (and half-sibling), Neji, who was four at the time. Around the same time, she was almost successfully kidnapped by a Kumo ninja who had just ironed out a peace treaty with Konoha. Her father killed him and recovered her, however Kumo demanded that the killer be put to death. So her uncle, and Neji's father, volunteered and died instead of her father. This lead to Neji hating her and the entirety of the Main Family for the next nine years.
Only a few years later, Hinata was deemed a lost cause by her father because she was considered too weak and gentle, and he took up training her little sister. This and Neji's hatred of her are the main causes of her lack in self-confidence. At the age of twelve, after she joined Team 8, her father had given up on her to the point that he left her in the care of Yuuhi Kurenai, the sensei of Team 8.
After graduating from the academy and being put on Team 8 with Inuzuka Kiba and Aburame Shino, she began to train even harder to become stronger and change herself. Eventually culminating in participating in the Chuunin exams with her team, where she made it all the way to the preliminary matches. Unfortunately, she was pitted against Neji who was considered to be a genius of the Hyuuga Family and who had nothing but hatred for her. Yet she was able to see the causes of his hatred and called him out on it, enraging him to the point of where he almost killed her. Two years later, at fourteen, she would retake the Chunnin Exams and be promoted to the level of Chuunin.
When Naruto returned to the village, she isn't seen in any real fashion until Team Kurenai (formerly Team 8) accompanies Team Kakashi on the mission to find Itachi, and also Sasuke, if they come across him. This mission is ultimately a failure as Itachi died and Sasuke was taken away by Tobi/Madara before they could reach him. The next time she is seen, is when Pein invades Konoha and destroys it. The culmination of all her years of hard work at becoming a stronger person happens when she defends Naruto from Pein as she confesses her love to him, and almost dies, as she knew she would. She survives though, and is only seen a little after this: being overjoyed that Naruto returned, accepting the fact that they have to kill Sasuke, and allowing Naruto to be the one who takes care of Sasuke.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: There was a pain in her head that throbbed with every heartbeat. It was almost unbearable, and the chances of it stopping were on par with her heart giving out. Not that it had not happened almost once before, but that was a memory Hinata willingly chose to forget. She sucked in a harsh breath and squeezed her eyes shut tighter; she was a ninja, she was a woman, she could and would deal with a headache. Or try to, at least. She often was not very good with trying, but she would do her best. As, after all, she could not spend the entire day in bed because of a headache.
And she had a feeling she had been asleep for too long; Kiba and Shino must be starting to wonder why she had yet to arrive for training. So she took in a deep breath and opened her eyes--or tried to. There was nothing but pain the moment the tiniest bit of light hit them that she shut them as fast as she could.
'My...my eyes... What is going on?' she thought, while out-loud she softly groaned. "Ow... Why is it so...bright?"
She could hear her pants fill up her room and wondered when her home became so empty for such a soft sound to fill up her room. Yet the pain has not gone away and she cannot hold onto any complicated thought long enough to worry. Instead, using her limited knowledge of medicine, she rolled onto her stomach and pressed her face into her pillow. And in the artificial darkness she opened her eyes again with better results. The pain did not go away, but it did not get any worse either.
And then it hit her.
She did not have an actual "bed", but a futon. Nor were her pillows so fluffy....
With the limits of her still-adjusting eyes, she lifted her head and slowly looked around.
This definitely was not Konoha. Nor the Hyuuga compound. Nor her room.
"Where...am I? ...Father? ...Anyone? When did this... No, how, um... How did this happen?"
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: I... um... Is anyone from Konoha around? I can't really...be...the only one here, right? I mean, it just wouldn't make any, um, sense, right? Then again, none of this makes sense...
I wonder if Father notices me missing. Or if Kiba-kun and Shino-kun will look for me.... The elders aren't going to be, um..."happy". Nor is Neji-nii-san... I wonder if I'll ever see any of them again. Just, please don't let them worry too much. Kurenai-sensei shouldn't go through it, especially in her condition....
INTENT: I really enjoy Hinata as a character; she is a symbol that anyone can change themself through hard work and determination. And she's very fun to write. I don't entirely know yet what I want to do with her in Paradisa, more of a "go with the flow and see what will happen/find a niche for her" type of thing. And possibly explore other facets of her character that don't involve her infatuation with Naruto.
