Separated at birth? Revenge of the Synth edition

Off-topic: I am now officially in new-laptop-shopping mode. I tried to hold out until my arbitrarily-set four-year mark, September, but my second power adapter has stopped functioning and my battery has only 32% left. So I am no longer going to use my Dell Inspiron 1100 until I have to turn it on to transfer my files to my new laptop.... Any suggestions? My only requirement is that it has to be able to run The Sims 2.

Okay, so this is a blog recurring feature idea I've been kicking around for a while. You know how there are songs that sound so much like other songs? (i.e. Coldplay and just about any other artist you can think of) Anyway, I wanted to do this with embedded streaming audio like on one of my favorite music blogs, Resonator Magazine, but I haven't yet been able to figure out how to do that. (Any ideas?)

I don't want to make people download songs, so that's why I'm not just putting up YouSendIt links. So, for now, for purposes of easy listening, I'm using YouTube clips. Both of the videos below are interesting, but try to listen at least to the first 15 seconds of each song to get the pure aural comparison, since the vids are nothing alike.

Exhibit A:

This, of course, is Modest Mouse's new single "Dashboard" from We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.

Exhibit B:

You might not recognize this one. It's Jars of Clay's "Dead Man (Carry Me)" from their new album, Good Monsters.

Even though MM's entry kind of sustains the hook throughout, whereas Jars' goes poppy in the chorus, both of these sound like B-sides from the Killers' Hot Fuss (which I suppose you could then call the babydaddy). We Were Dead... was released last month, and Good Monsters last September, but I doubt Isaac Brock was taking notes from Dan Haseltine (although wouldn't that be cool?).

Genealogy verdict:

Babydaddy: Hot Fuss (The Killers)

Fraternal twins: "Dead Man" (Jars of Clay); "Dashboard" (Modest Mouse)

Judge's note: I am of course aware that B.Flo did not invent new wave. That is a whole 'nother paternity case.
