I had managed to sit patiently for a whole hour after Courtney had left for the day. Once that hour had passed my patience followed. Miss Edith and that stuffed bear were good company for twenty minutes or so. That is, until Edith became cross with him...then the bickering began. They’re probably still at it now. I had left them alone to settle their differences.

Now in the lobby of the apartment building, I sat by a payphone watching the tenants walk in and out of the building. None of them looked quite right. They all seemed dazed and put off by their melancholy lives. Some of them even looked as though they would kill anyone who so much as muttered the words ‘Good Morning’ to them. I waited hopefully...but those words were spoken by noone--to noone. No,--I guess waking up in this place would take the ‘Good’ right out of anyone’s morning.

But if anyone had the right to be grumpy it was me. I’m the one stuck here--inside--watching them come and go as they please. Humans....

I looked up as the phone above me rang. Noone seemed to be awaiting a call...and noone came over to the machine--now on its third ring. After the fifth ring I pick up the phone, press down the receiver to hang up on the person on the other line, and let it hand from its long silver cord.

I wonder if Edith and her new friend have made up yet....
