Unfamiliar Ceiling

Who: Laili and Wes
Where: Sunnydale Hospital
When: Sunday January 17, morning

At first, he was assuming that it had all been a bad dream. Of course, the first thing he felt when he woke up wasn't pain, but an unfamiliar bed. This led credence to the 'bad dream' idea. However, when Wesley opened his eyes, he saw and unfamiliar ceiling. His eye was still unopenable. Still, no pain. That's odd. He happen to glance down at the IV in his arm. "Oh, it must be morphine," he said outloud. "How nice of them."

Laili was sitting by his bedside, holding the hand that didn't have an IV in it. "You're awake," she said, managing a wan smile. "And yes, that's morphine - they want to make sure you're not in pain."

He turned to look at Laili. "Hello," he said, smiling up at her. It was that dopey grin of someone on a lot of drugs tends to give. "How are you doing?" Memories started to pour back in of the night. "I've never been so happy to hear Amir before."

"You heard him?" Laili asked, glad of that. "He will be so pleased to know that. He was a big help in locating you. " She squeezed his hand gently. "I was so worried..." And angry.

"I probably shouldn't have told her that her shoes made her look fat," Wesley said. "She didn't like that." He shook his head, which some part of him knew that should hurt, but the morphine was a god-sent. "Did she hurt you at all?"

"She didn't have much of a chance to," Laili admited. "I was a little... agressive." She didn't know how much of the fight Wesley remembered at the moment, with the morphine.

Wesley had to think about it for a moment, but then he remembered what happened. A little hazily, but he remembered. "I believe you tore her head off. It's a good way to dispatch a vampire, though. How did you know that I was gone?"

"She left a note. And your blood- which I scented, and Amir used to track you," Laili said. She was getting angry again just thinking about it, and growled a little deep in her throat. "Stupid vampire."

He squeezed her hand a little. "Almost all vampires are stupid. That's why most of them don't last more than a few months." Normally, he might have been a little worried that she had gotten so angry, but now he was grateful for it. Brittany didn't seem to know what was coming for her. "She's gone now, though."

"Very gone," Laili agreed, and relaxed again at that thought. "I just couldn't bear that she hurt you - if I could kill her over again, I would. If I could kill her a thousand times in various painful ways, I would. No one should hurt you, ever..."

"I think that she was expecting just Gwen to come in. Silly vampire didn't do her research," Wesley said, reaching up to stroke Laili's hair. "I'm glad to have you as my wife, and not just because you can kill bubble-headed vampires. I love you."

"I love you too, darling." Laili leaned in and gently kissed his forehead. "I just hope this is the end of our troubles. Maybe things will settle now that the vampire is gone..."

"Nothing ever really 'settles' in this town," he said with a sigh. Sometimes, he wondered what it would be like if they just left. He really shouldn't think like that, though.

"I think we should go on vacation over spring break," Laili said. "We need to get away for a while. I know it's still a whiles away yet, but now that Gwen's out of the house and with her wife, it's really just us so we could take a bit of time off from all this and go away somewhere. Maybe a tropical island where there's lots of sun and no vampires."

"I can't exactly swim, but that sounds delightful still." He never bothered because it was deemed a 'wasteful' activity by his father growing up. Plus, the gloomy part of England that he went to school in didn't exactly have the prettiest of summers.

"I can teach you how," Laili said, smiling at the thought of it. "Either that, or we can get you an extra-large pair of water wings."

"Maybe we can get me one of those rubber duckies to go around my waist," he joked. "I'll look very cute, won't I?" He laughed a little. "I think you can teach me, though."

Laili laughed. "That must be some good morphine. I'm glad you're not in pain. The doctor said you only have to stay over for observation, so you should be out in time for the weekend. Hopefully they'll give you something to take at home."

"Morphine does seem to be a wonder drug," he commented. He knew that normally he wouldn't say that. It had to be the morphine. "I think it would be good to be looking at a familiar ceiling again."

"And I'll make you all your favorite foods," Laili said, patting his hand again. "And bring you tea and crumpets in bed."

"Tea and crumpets in bed sound lovely," he said, fighting back a yawn. He was stll feeling sleepy from the drugs that were being pumped into his system.

"Are you tired, dear?" Laili brushed the hair back from his forehead. "You can rest if you want to. I'll be right here when you wake."

"I think that it's the drugs," he told her. "They are putting me to sleep so that my body can heal a bit." That was his understanding of it, anyway. "Do you promise to be here?

"Of course," Laili said, kissing his forehead. "Right by your side."

He relaxed back into the bed a little. "I'm going to hold you to that promise," he said sleepily.
