Continued from this postWhere: Adam's dorm room
In no time, Gideon and Adam exiting the elevator that took them to the top floor of the dorm building. For specific...health reasons, and ample amounts of cash, Adam had been able to obtain a private room. He led Gideon to the room unlocking it with a keycard given to him for extra security. He stepped to the side, holding the door open for the other to enter. "Home sweet home" he remarked a little sarcastically.
"At least you found a place," Gideon noted. "Though this place reminds me of the private schools I got to be so privileged to attend." He rolled his eyes. "
"You don't have a place to stay?" Adam asked, closing the door behind them. Then, he moved and took a seat on the edge of is bed, eyes watching Gideon.
"Not exactly," Gideon shrugged, not wanting to mention his temporary placement with Larry. The guy was a jock, but it didn't mean that they had the same thought level.
Adam nodded the motioned to a chair at the desk. "So what brought you here to glorious Sunnyhell?"
He sat in the nearby chair, "Obviously not the sights," he quipped before becoming quite sober in his response, "I came from Pittsburgh cause, simply put, my father's a jerk - real controlling time with way too high expectations for anything normal. Couldn't even wait until after finishing high school."
"I know the type" Adam kept his attention on Gideon. "But why here? You can go anywhere to get away from a control freak father."
He shrugged, "I just . . . stopped, y'know? Got too tired of running, and Sunnydale seemed quiet enough to stay under the radar.
Yeah, if your just a normal human being Adam thought to himself, "I suppose I get that."
"I might start moving again," Gideon considered. "Though I've started to wonder if there's anywhere else to go." There wasn't exactly a lot of places out there for someone living off a fake identification and less than a couple hundred dollars rolled into a sock.
Adam let out a one breath laugh, grinning crookedly. "Yeah, I've thought about going back to New York, but the I remember my reasons for coming out here and...just not the time to go"
"So enough about me and my idiotic decision to leave with jack, why are you here?" He asked curiously, cause really, that was all in the truth he could tell. "We've both determined that this isn't New York."
"You really wanna know?" Adam's expression went completely and deadly serious.
"Yea, sure," Gideon replied just as sober as before. Maybe if he heard something worse than his, he might completely come clean.
Taking a deep breath, Adam settled back onto his elbows, piercing emerald eyes locked with Gideon's. "I'm a vampire. And I move every four or five years, enroll in a new college and live as a perpetual college student"
Gideon stared for a moment and then sat back and laughed. "You're kidding me, right? This is some sort of joke on the new guy? Ok, where's the bloody camera?" He paused. "Either that or I'm officially hallucinating from coming off of the adrenaline and lack of sleep."
Adam chuckled. He'd expected as much. "Nope, not kidding. Got the fangs and everything" Opening his mouth wide and drawing back his lips, Adam bared his fangs to Gideon. This was usually about the time they took off running and screaming, so, the vampire prepared for it.
Great. Either he was hallucinating or that was very good stage make-up. He didn't expect the latter, yet he didn't move, seemingly more shocked to move than to actually bolt. He leaned back, "Well, I have officially seen everything."
Adam chuckled yet again, shrugged very nonchalantly. "I can pretty much bet with full confidence that you haven’t" Adam retorted, thinking of his friend Emil, and his...affliction.
"Well, if you're stalking and invitation up here means something besides being friendly," he couldn't hold back a smirk on that thought. "Right, honestly, at this point, I couldn't care. Besides this bag, all I have is a backpack, a wad of cash, and oh, yes, photo shopped identification that worked once for the bus, so it's not like I have much to look up to." He paused again, took in a deep breath, and sighed, "I'll either be dead or back home, and the first sounds so much better."
Adam frowned, a little put off by the kids lack of enthusiasm. He knew things were bad for most people. Hell, they'd been for him when he was mortal, but never did he wish himself dead. "Actually, I've fed tonight. So, your death wish won't be answered." A thought hit Adam. He needed more willing donors. Maybe this kid was fucked up enough for that?
"Damn," Gideon muttered. "Well I guess I better get ready to make that call soon for that appointment . . ." he slipped and quickly stopped. "Complex."
"Appointment?" the vampire asked, thoroughly perplexed. That was so off topic.
Gideon shrugged, "Controlling type, remember? Guy had a few . . . lifestyle decisions that I didn't quite take to well to." He remembered being in the car and bolting right then and there. Highly Experimental? Yea, right.
"Then what type of appointment do you have to make?" Adam was just going to be nosey.
"I haven't a clue, really. Kinda bolted the moment I heard dangerous and classified," Gideon admitted. He was starting to sound stupid. "Guess I'll find out in a few days."
There certainly was more to this kid that Adam could tell from just the looks of him. "If you ever wanted to really get Daddy's goat, you could get turned into a blood sucker!"
"Would it really be that simple?" Gideon questioned, holding back a laugh. "I doubt it." He started to wonder if there was a way to provoke this character. Probably not as easily as the kids he used to get into fights with at school.
Adam shrugged. "Actually, I don't know. I don't remember when I was changed really." He watched the boy, getting an odd feeling about him suddenly.
"I wish that I could forget." he said softly. What a way to go. "So you really just wander every few years from college to college? You know that there are other things out there, right?" The thought reminded him of something . . . or, rather, someone.
"If by things you mean vampires, yes, I know there are" Adam sounded a little offended by the kid's choice of words.
"No, by other things," he corrected. "I mean to do with it. I can't imagine staying around these institutions all day and night even if there's plenty of people around." By people, he got it. It was that simple to him or maybe he was just that exhausted and ready to jump out a window.
Adam was still slightly confused. "To do with what?"
"With life," okay, not the best wording, but he went with it. "You're obviously not bound to sticking around these campuses, and money cannot be an issue, so why? Why just stay here. Why not do something?" At the same moment he was asking himself that same thing and frowned, for it hurt to realize that he threw that out the moment he ran. He really was screwed.
Adam opened his mouth to say something but stopped himself. The kid had a point. Why did he choose to live this way? Oh yeah, because it was an easy life. But was it fulfilling...no. Adam knew that all to well though.
"I have nothing but this life. That's why. If...hell even if it was just a friend to spend it with, I'd certainly do more"
And for once, Gideon didn't have a response. He didn't have a single thing to fire back. He just sat there, silent, and probably look rather darn awkward in doing so for something else in that overwhelmed head was shouting above all else by that single sentence.
"What would you do in my position?" Adam asked curiously
"I'd wander - see the sights, experience life to its utter fullest before even considering settling down into reality again. Beyond that, I haven't a clue. I'd probably wind up selling my artwork online to pay the bills and hold a seemingly normal life." Gideon took another full swig of his water for it to settle in - just how ignorant he was only a few minutes earlier and try to forget how those words reminded him of the only real reason he'd go back.
Being a vampire, Adam picked up on the subtle difference in Gideon's heart beat. He wasn't being totally honest with him "Why don't you tell me what's really going on with you?"
"What are you, my shrink?" Gideon asked despite how rude it sounded. He stood.
"No, but I offered up my truths. You could do the same, especially if I'm going to let you stay here" Adam remained calm, staying exactly where he sat.
"You really want me to be honest? Aight, fine. I'm a kid from Pittsburgh that went through more athletic training than I can count, and one day, my father decided to take me out to his work, something about "highly experimental" was mentioned, and I ran at the next stop light." Yea, that felt good to get off his chest, but it still sounded too wild to be real. "I ran without anything and here I am."
Adam blinked. How could a father even think of doing something like that to his own child. "Does he know where you are?"
Gideon shrugged, "I've been watching, keeping an eye out, it's why I noticed you at the diner and by the field, but no, I don't think so." He paused, taking in another deep breath to calm his nerves. He hated being pushed. "I guess the hair color, removing the piercing, stopping everything but the running worked."
Adam suddenly seemed to get a soft spot for this kid. He too had ran...but in totally different ways...from things in his past. "I know this is odd. but...you can stay here with me if you'd like. The security here is pretty tight, for obvious reasons. "He pointed to his mouth "There's two beds but I don't have a room mate."
"Do I really have that much of a choice?" Gideon questioned. He didn't, but he wanted to ask anyway. He had planned on leaving Larry's before Thanksgiving, probably stay on the street instead of intruding.
"Well, yeah, you do." Adam stood and crossed the room to the desk, brushing up against Gideon as he rummaged through the middle drawer. He pulled out another key card exactly like his own and tossed it on the desk. "You can take me up on the offer or walk out now. Your choice, kid"
"Why?" he asked. He hadn't sat back down or moved.
"Why what?" Adam stood in front of Gideon, arms folded over his chest.
"Why are you doing this?" he questioned, not nearly as intimidated as he probably should be.
Adam shrugged, "I've been there before, running scared, wanting to just disappear. And you know what?"
"Yea?" It didn't sound too impossible. Still, the arrangement was hard to believe. If someone saw. "What?"
"I got exactly what I wished for." Adam moved back to the bed, plopping down on it and put his hands behind his head. He stared at the boy, waiting to see what he'd do.
Gideon watched for a moment, but then he moved to pick up the key and paused there with his fingers just inches away, "And seriously, given the circumstances, what are you expecting in return cause I can almost promise you that I never make the best of company."
"Bad company is better than no company. "There, Adam admitted it, he was lonely.
"Very well," he softly replied and picked up the key. He noted that his duffle bag still lied there - filled with useless junk - clothes, art supplies, but still it was almost all he had. "I'll be back within the hour. Need to grab what I left there and don't really want to worry them." He would be back, but he had left something more important there.
A slight smile spread over the vampire's face. He nodded. "No problem, man."
