"Shoes are overrated."

Sam had stopped off for coffee after school; she'd even been with Nica. With it being full daylight and all, she figured she could have a look around downtown, and she'd happened by the Magic Box in time to hear Michael talking to himself.

"That's what I say," Michael agreed, turning. "Hiya, Sam. How hangs it?"

[my_sister_sam]

"Can't complain. Well, I could," she corrected herself, "but I won't. How're you? Are you still, you know ... ?" She tipped her head momentarily at the Magic Box.

"Crazy?" Michael guessed, smiling. "Yeah, a little bit."

[my_sister_sam]

Sam laughed. "No, silly. Are you still doing the magic group thing?" she asked, keeping her voice low.

[secret_survivor]

"Yeah, the Order of the Requiem is still in session," Michael nodded. "Just need to round up the old guard... I haven't seen a lot of them yet this year."

[my_sister_sam]

"Well, if there's anything I can do to help you," Sam said, "let me know. I think Anna trusts you enough to be okay with me spending time with you and Ming," she said, barely rolling her eyes at all.

"Careful, I now have a new Chinese boy in my social circle," Michael cautioned amusedly, gesturing at the store. "Ming's cousin, Mari. But, yeah, if you see anyone else from the coven, let them know the gig's still on, huh?"

[my_sister_sam]

" ... a guy named Mari?" Sam raised an eyebrow. "Okay, whatever. Anyway, I'll do that." She nodded. "You gonna teach me some stuff, sometime?"

"Sure, if you like -- nothing that summons Cthulhu, though. Your sister has enough problems," Michael said with a grin. "And, yeah, Mari."

[my_sister_sam]

"What's a cthulhu? Or do I want to know? And is he cute?" She blinked. "Not the cthulhu. the Mari."

"You probably don't, no, and since I don't find boys cute as a rule, you'd have to judge for yourself," Michael answered, smiling. "But that's him in there with Ming and the store owner."

[my_sister_sam]

Sam turned and looked, standing on her toes to get a better look through the window. "Not bad," she said. "Do you think my sister's overprotective?"

"Well..." Michael pondered that a moment. "I think the more you know about how bad things can get, and how ugly things are out there, the more you want to make sure that nobody you care about falls victim to it, you know?"

[my_sister_sam]

"I guess," Sam said, but she didn't sound convinced. "But she gives me the third degree about everyone I meet. Kinda hard to make friends, sometimes."

[secret_survivor]

"Well, I'm sure she just doesn't want to either have to kill you after you become an undead monstrosity, or have to find your desecrated remains one morning," Michael sighed. "Or see you get seriously hurt, or enslaved to some sort of sex ring, or caught up in someone's virgin sacrifice cult, or whatever. It kinda makes it hard to just say 'fuck it' and have fun." He made a face.
