Weird weather

Winter didn't start until late January this year ... and now summer won't end. This is mid-October, for heaven's sake! And it's not just an isolated microclimatic situation, it's all over the region:0122 am EDT Wed Oct 10 2007

...Record high temperature set at Washington Dulles...

A record high temperature of 94 degrees  was set at Washington Dulles yesterday. This breaks the old record of 87 degrees set
back in 1990.
The records were shattered in Martinsburg WV and Charlottesville VA as well. And the temperature at Dulles Airport not only broke the record for October 9, but also the all-time record for any date in October.

This area is also in a severe drought, with a rainfall deficit of almost 10 inches, causing the state government to declare a Drought Watch. So far those of us with city water rather than a well are okay, but the reservoirs are dropping and the river flows are way down, so mandatory conservation could be imposed before long.

Fortunately the weather is supposed to be delightfully cool tomorrow -- in the upper 60s! With my luck, I'll have to go in for jury duty instead of going for a walk.
But I'm hopeful that I might not because I have a high group number -- I'm in group 29 out of 33, and they call them in sequentially. More likely I'll have to serve on Friday -- or I might escape being called at all. The courts were closed on Monday for Columbus Day, so it's only a four-day week; no one was called in on Tuesday, and they ordered groups 1 through 9 to serve today. So they might not get to my number at all, which would be great. I've never served, but people who have say it's very boring -- you just sit around in a room all day and often don't ever get called to actually sit on a jury.
