doves

when i was 4 or 5 i used to spend a lot of time looking at a pair of doves that apparently chose to reside on my grandparent's balcony. my grandmother would often join me, and she would say -

"do you hear this sound they are making? the guru-guru? do you know what it means?"

the way she said "guru-guru" would always make me giggle. "no, what's it mean?"

"they are saying i love you, you love me." grandmother would break out in a huge smile. "i love you, you love me. back and forth. guru-guru-guru."

i would laugh and clap in my hands and loudly join in. "i love you, you love me!"

today i don't even remember where my grandparent's apartment used to be. maybe it's been torn down. living across two continents, i'm as far from the small idyll that used to be a balcony and grandmother's cackling as one can possibly be. but i know that i am still yearning for this, have been since the day i first heard of it, this kind of simple and honest love that makes two doves come back each day to the same balcony, together, always.

i love you, you love me.
