"Of course you can imagine my roommate's surprise when he discovered that the tattoo didn't mean warrior at all, but was actually monkey in latin," I say smiling smugly over the table at Winifred. Her entire face lights up when she laughs, making her look even more beautiful than when she had her usual appearance of rapt attention. She looks stunning in simple black dress that manages to be modest and yet distinctly sexy at the same time.
"What?" Winifred asks, her smile fading as she suddenly looked self consciously and touched her nose. "What is it?"
I shook my head, realizing that I've been staring. "Nothing, I just... Did I mention that you look stunning tonight?"
She her cheeks warm to a rosier color, but she doesn't break eye contact. "Once or twice, but feel free to say it as much as you like."
The waiter places the check between us and I pick it up quickly. This date is definitely coming out of my pocket. Besides, I did get a bit of trade yesterday when I banished a g'mor demon from a warehouse downtown. Though the job didn't quite pay as much as I'd hoped, I did get a free case of shrimp.
I reached into my pocket and placed the money on the table for the waitress, who had wasted no time in telling us that her name was Gwen and that she had just gotten a divorce from her husband who did nothing but watching Wheel of Fortune and collect unemployment. Of course I'd thought about taking Winifred somewhere a little more upscale than an all night diner, but it turned out that she was rather fond of waffles. Also, it seemed she had a particular affinity for popcorn, as during the movie I'd had to get up to refill our bucket at least three times. I didn't really mind though, it was obvious to me from my powers of deduction who the killer was almost instanteously.
Though I must say that I did enjoy it when Fred jumped and scooted closer to me for protection. Even if there was no real danger.
All in all, I'd have to say that it'd been a very pleasant evening. The more I got to know Winifred the more that I felt like she was someone that I could open up to. She was wise beyond her years in the way that she kept her mind open to new ideas and her ability at problem solving was something to truly be envied. Intelligent, beautiful and most of all, kind... I fear that any chance of a strictly professional relationship had gone out the window the moment that we'd kissed.
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't replayed that through my mind. I wondered if she'd been thinking about it as much as I.
"I suppose I should be getting you home," I said looking at her over the table. "Do you need a doggies bag?"
She laughed as if she was amused at my choice of words and shook her head. "No, I'm stuffed."
I nodded standing up and holding my hand out to her so that she could have some assistance sliding out of the leather booth. We walked into the cool night air and I saw her shiver slightly.
"It's a bit chilly, isn't it?" I said my eyes alighting on her bare shoulders and then moving up to meet her eyes. I shrugged off my leather jacket and held it out so that she could slip into it. After a moment's hesitation she obliged smiling brightly up at me. I handed her a helmet and put on my own.
On the ride back to her dorm room my mind wandered. I found myself thinking how glad I was that I hadn't gone with my brain that day in the park but had instead followed through on my impulse in kissing her. I parked the bike in front of the intimidating building and walked her up the stairs to the front door.
Now suddenly confronted with having to say goodbye for the night I found myself wanting to stall. The night had been too perfect to end.
"So what's on the agenda for tomorrow?" I heard myself asking just to make conversation.
"I mean not that I expect to be on it," I quickly followed up. "Not that I'd mind, but of course I don't expect you to want to see me everyday. Though of course if you wanted to, I wouldn't be opposed to it. I just meant, what are your plans in general for tomorrow?"
