They went away in a magical chariot and showers of sparkles to a land far away, and lived happily ever after. Rue had never hesitated for a moment about it: not going never crossed her mind, but she did wonder, once she was there, why living in a book felt no different from living in the real world.

For a time, everything was peaceful, together with Mytho in the palace, dancing countless pas de deux, warm and safe. She wore gold, discarding the blood-red that used to suit her. There were many birds in the trees of their country, but no ravens. Sometimes, she flinched when their wings cast dark shadows on the walls, and she would try to hide it, until one day when she saw Mytho doing the same. After that, concealment never seemed necessary, and over the years the fearful reaction itself disappeared entirely.

The kingdom and its people lived harmoniously, ruled by a prince and princess they adored. One day, Mytho told Rue that he was surprised nothing ever threatened the kingdom; the role of a prince was to be brave, to protect with valour against countless dangers, and yet there were none.

Rue linked her arm in his, and said that the adventure was over.

It was a curious thing, to see Mytho age. An old feeling resurfaced, and she wanted to say no, don't change, you're perfect as you are, but she stamped on it. Once she would have been content with a doll for a beloved, but she had since found that not all change was bad. With his heart returned, she could talk to him now, talk to him and have him respond and mean it too, and that was glorious. So she didn't complain as he grew taller. Soon she came to think he looked very handsome that way.

There came a point when they stopped being the prince and princess, and started being the king and queen. It was a natural progression: they only noticed after their subjects started calling them by those titles: Queen Rue, King Siegfried. But to each other, they were only ever Rue and Mytho.

The peace and relaxation of the kingdom was as heady as a drug. Rue's friends smiled and said 'about time' when she told them she was expecting a baby, and she and Mytho stayed up late discussing baby names for weeks. A nursery was set up in the sunniest room in the castle, with a ballet-dancer frieze on the wall.

Their first child had feathers for hair: soft, thick, and as black as a raven's wing.
