I watched a movie in finnish today, its name was Mies vailla mennisyyttä (in english The man without a past), by Aki Kaurismäki.
I admit it, I am not a big fun of finnish movies, in my opinion they are very depressing and sad. They put all this long infinite silence scenes which make the movie feel endless. Aki Kaurismäki, from what I have heard, is one of the best finnish movie maker...but still. And also, the actors are so cold, I am not sure it is make on purpose.
Maybe it´s because I have read the book that inspirated the movie 2 years ago while I was in Finland as an exchange student, maybe this influenced me, but I loved it so much, and I was expecting something more from the movie.
The book was written by an italian, Diego Marani with the name Nuova grammatica finlandese (literally translated New finnish grammar).
Of course it´s not a grammar, but a novel. The best novel I have ever read.
It´s about this man who forgets his past, his name, his country, even his language. When he is found he doesn´t have any ID or anything that said who he is. So, a doctor, and also a priest, try to teach him what they think is his real language: finnish. Actually memory and finnish language are the main characters of the novel. And of course I loved the book because of that, how language gives you an identity, how it can make you feel home, how it is somehow a mother. <3
There is something philosophic about the language in this book and it´s just amazing.
And in the movie all this language is missed, not even mentionated.
How bad.
