I think I realized today how much I really hate politics. Really, really hate it. So CAFTA was passed in the House by a 219-217 vote. About a week ago only 50 some representatives were saying yes, while 160 some were confirmed nos. The remaining were undecided but clearly the nos had an advantage. Except for the stupid fact of freaking stupid bipartisanship where the president and majority party are using every last freaking tool they can to buy off votes. Why was my own representative Dave Camp undecided two days ago and then voted yes last night (after the House allowed an hour of voting when the legal standard allows voting to remain open for only 15 minutes, something the republican majority leaders decided to overlook solely because, uh, they were losing), and then today, hours after Camp switches to vote yes on CAFTA, two pieces of legislation he has been pushing are suddenly and quickly passed through the House, allocating specific funds to northern Michigan? I am so angry that I am just now realizing these political games and dealings are real and they are affecting real people. I hate that most people´s response tends to be ¨well that´s just politics for you.¨ How can people justify buying and selling votes and support within Congress? I feel like they have no concept of the fact that their every decision affects REAL PEOPLE, some decisions more than others. Well, at least we can rest easy knowing that while more Central Americans fall into the obscurity of poverty and destitution that Michigan now has the funding to add a piece of some river to a national park. Sounds like a fair trade to me.
