Do I Have A Dream (MLK Day Poem)

Apr 04, 2008 21:50

when will those who have
dream as those who have not

and to those who can not dream at all
with the fallen in every reflection
taunted with sleepless nights
With the search for enough
That lies just beyond the hand
now closed under another heel

relieved only by a release
that comes from
the weight being lifted
by those who
climbed before ... Him

may they wake
covered in the footprints
of every dream they stepped on
tattooed with the  blood
of every dreamer they laid to rest
drenched in sweat that is fed
by every tear shed from the ache
of emptiness

I dream of waking
My soul free to breathe deeply
no longer burdened by the guilt
that comes from the association
of needing them

I dream of waking

where there is no longer them
