Our fair Governor reportedly engaged the services of a prostitute. The NY Times reports that as Attorney General, Spitzer prosecuted prostitution rings and spoke derisively of them. We should be feeling some justifed shadenfreude at the exposure of his hypocrisy right?

Wrong.

It is we, the voters, that force our leaders into these hypocritical positions. We want leaders who never stray from monogamy or cheat on their taxes, even while we make American pastimes of both pursuits.

The commentary on Deadlbreaker.com, a Wall-Street news site says "'There is a God' was the first thought on Wall Street. The next thought is, 'Please don't let it be revealed that I'm Lucky Number 7.' You know I'm right". You're right. Sure they hate "Spitz'or Swallows" for his zealous prosecution of financial matters, but the fact of the matter is that he got busted for indulging in a stockbroker's favorite pastime. So in between the cheers for Spitzor's bust, perhaps they could chime-in with a little support for legalization?

One brave and lone voice amidst the comments on nytimes.com says, very perceptively:With our antiquated, Puritanical thinking, we have turned a natural human biological drive into something sinful and criminal. And some people believe that we don’t have religious law in America. Please, what basis in law makes prostitution illegal between two consenting adults?

I'm sick and fucking tired of the puritanical, anti-sex, hypocrisy. If you don't like sex, go live on a glacier and stop reproducing: don't worry, your kind will die out before global warming will trouble you.

I'm sick and fucking tired of people oppressing me with their hatred of other people's sexual pleasures.

I'm sick and fucking tired of people spewing hate at prostitutes, very likely hours after they've just whacked-off to a download of "Teen sluts vol 21: ass-to-mouth".

I hate and despise the culture I live in. And you know what? Despite all my rantings about being queer, not-necesarily-monogamous, kinky, and sex-work positive, I'm far less promiscuous and far more able to be satisfied by monogamous, vanilla, intimacy than many of the fuckheads who pretend to be something they're not.

Online comments to the Spitzer stories on the NY Times overwhelmingly call for Spitzer's resignation, on the basis that he is immoral or has humiliated his wife. Several more comments decry the supposed practice of politician's wives "standing by their man", and other comments wonder why politicians (like Spitzer and Ex-Governor McGreevy) have no shame in trotting out their wives to be humiliated at their press-conferences.

Apparently people believe that politician's spouses have no wills of their own, and that they stand on podiums at their partners' commands. While Mrs. Spitzer might be surprised and angry at her husband, why in the world should she feel humiliated? She did nothing. Furthermore, perhaps it's not a lack of backbone that keeps her "by her husband's side"; perhaps she values herself enough as a person and a wife to not feel threatened by a sex worker. Co-workers, best-buddies, and perhaps even therapists vie every bit as much for a spouse's intimacy as a prostitute does, and people don't wonder why people "stick by their spouse" when that spouse spends the majority of hir waking hours with those people?
