It's nice to hear Nino talk about friends once in a while.

Thanks for translating!

ooh. so that's why he's so careful with money? though I do agree that splitting the bill (to the point of counting the exact amount like some people do) can be such a downer after meals.

thanks for sharing this translation.

i know nino is really stingy, but i think he's just practical... i also feel bad talking about money after a good meal and chat with friends..but honestly, money for japanese is nothing, so they'll be really offended if you count your change in front of them. besides, they are disciplined, honest and polite individuals - character is most important than money..

I actually find just the opposite. There are so many times I've handed a Japanese person a 1000-yen bill for something that's 988-yen, and they INSIST on giving me change no matter how much I tell them I don't want it. The other day, someone forced 1-yen on me as change for a 299-yen thing after I gave her 300-yen. It drives me crazy, because to be so hung up as that makes me feel like there's a distinct distance put between me and whomever. When you're friends, who cares? You'll likely end up owing the other person some spare change in return sometime anyway. But here, it seems to matter to a lot of people.

oh really? that's interesting to know.

over here the cashiers insist on giving you pieces of candy as "change" when they haven't got any.

I think this had to be my favourite part: "Things don't progress if you just discuss them, and if you don't have an alternate plan you can put into practice, you shouldn't casually voice a dissenting opinion. Really, I think the best way is to try out both people's suggestions."

A very frank, to-the-point trait that really shows his maturity. Not an easy thing to do really, and even now, I find it hard at times to bite my tongue when undesirable words are said.
