Sometimes I wonder if pop culture should run hand-in-hand with charity. Would it be possible to have The Harry Potter Foundation for Alzheimer's? If so, how great would it be if the fanbase for Harry Potter instead got involved in a charity for something other than itself?
It does happen! When the Haiti earthquake happened, a number of fandoms did fundraising and I was involved in particular with the Star Trek fandom, we had a nice little rivalry going on with the Adam Lambert fandom which resulted in a sizeable donation! Fandom CAN be used for good when people decide to do so!
From what I can tell they're in the Arts section, so they're not actually competing with no-kill shelters or centres for abused women; however, they are competing with dance classes for kids with CP and arts classes/toys for disabled kids, musical instruments for underprivileged kids and so forth so they still need to be set on fire and then rolled in salt.
They thought that their FAWESOME site can get kids into Harry Potter and off the street, encourage them to get involved in the art of writing fanfics, join the hearts of all humankind and bring world peace.
The thing is, I'm not even convinced that a fan-generated program wouldn't be an appropriate thing for such a grant program - it would depend entirely on the goal of the fans - but this business is giving such a bad name to everything because it's so obviously just grasping for money

I don't deny that fandom is a big motivator for a lot of people and I would be the first to say I've had a lot of excellent fandom experiences that came from being involved in fanfic. But the issue to me isn't that they applied for a grant, it's that they applied to a grant specifically designed to be awarded to people who come up with ideas that make the world a better place. If they'd applied for an art grant, it would be a different story, though I contend that the quasi-legal nature of fanfiction makes me uncomfortable even thinking about getting any money for any reason
