In any sort of rationality, it could suggest that his conscience got the better of him. He doesn't seem like a terrible person.

But he's asking for you not to stand up for him, either...
Either that's more of his conscience speaking, or he's hiding something. Or someone.

Just because he genuinely believes it... does not make it the truth. What proof is there that he did do it? Besides his words.

I'm still waiting... it's boring here on my own.
