It's 3:42 AM and I am working on my final paper for African Identities (history 310).... but actually, I'm on live journal...muwahahaha! :)
So, Katie and I kicked major academic butt in our presentation today for Mac's class. The class is Music 120, Music Performance as a Creative Process. I took the class for one reason, I wanted to be in an academic classroom setting with Mac. I have so much respect for him as a band director, and a mentor/advisor, but I felt like I was missing out on him as a professor....I'm happy to say that he has exceeded my expectations, and I look up to him even more now than I did before...
the presentation was a pre-concert lecture/talk. Katie and I chose a piece that we played for our concert last week, "Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual". Long story short, we totally cleaned up. We spent time speaking with outside sources, and that's the part I enjoyed most. I met with Matt Carotenuto, our African History professor (whose paper I SHOULD be writing right now) and I think that I found a new passion that I didn't know I had.... he gave me a few sources to read to help us relate to African Music better, and they came from a few ethnomusicologists that he recommended highly. Then it occurred to me.... I love history, I love people, and I love music. Why don't I look into Ethnomusicology graduate programs? So I have been doing that during my "mental breaks" from this paper tonight...
who knows, I might stray into a new career path. I would give anything to hop on a plane to west africa, or the Cape and study music right now. :) It's like one of my all time academic highs!!!!
ok, back to paper... it's almost 4:00 AM!
