I changed from my poor OOo 2.1 to OOo 3.0.0 when it was first published in October 2008. Then I changed to OOo 2.4 the next day. Why? you ask. Well, the page numbers wouldn't show no matter what I did. There was just ugly text "Page number" but not the page number itself. Some of the stories I read on my computer are dozens of pages long and I prefer to have the page numbers on them. If the document is under five pages, it doesn't bother me that much, but when the page count goes over ten...
I thought it was just a bug, since the version was brand-spanking new. It wouldn't be the first time there was a bug in some new version (no, this does not apply only to OOo but to pretty much any program). I checked when the next update would be (December 2008) and thought to wait. I forgot the whole thing for awhile and then around New Year decided to try again with the new update. I first checked dutifylly the changes in the update - and nothing of page numbering was said! Good lord, color me scandalized. So I decided to keep my OOo 2.4.
Now today I got tired of not getting those pretty pretty shiny ny~aah OOo Impress templates. So I said a quick prayer to whomever is responsible for developing OOo 3.x and hoped there would be either help at troubleshooting or an extension to change the bug. The page numbering problem was still around in OOo 3.0.1, so I googled to find help troubleshooting it.
It soon became clear I was the only one with this problem. Wtf people?? was my first thought. Surely I couldn't be the only one bothered by the lack of page numbers. This was the moment I started wondering if the problem was with my computer. Reinstalling OOo 3.0.1 didn't change the situation and neither did switching the Finnish version for the German version (yes, I quite liked my German OOo 2.4 ^___^).
When I finally gave up and browsed the options menu, I saw something horrible: a check in the little white box next to text "Anzeigen Feldnamen", show field names. Unchecking the box made my dear page numbers visible. Did I feel stupid?
Yes.
