(no subject)
For the first time in my life, I have a decent computer. A birthday present. Everything is beautiful and fast and I'm still sort of giggly over the fact that it has a widescreen monitor, which I have never used before and will take some getting used to, and it's beautiful. I love it.
Had some small difficulty hooking it up to the internet, but all's well now.
3GB of memory, dual-core processor. I have an mp3 player upstairs; for the first time I'll be able to actually use the thing. Long story about why I have an mp3 player I couldn't use, and not very interesting, so I won't bother.
The computer has Vista.
There's no getting around that.
Okay, so first impression?
I'm not feeling the hate. I'm really not. Maybe in a few weeks I will, but right now, I'm pretty happy. Perhaps there are those who would lynch me for that opinion, but that's the truth.
I've used every version of Windows from 3.1 to XP before, and, well, there's a pattern to Windows. Things are organised the same way, I can expect to find things in certain places, and if they're not, it's usually not too big a stretch to figure out where they are.
Within a few minutes of having the thing up and running, I suddenly went, holy crap I don't know where anything is.
If I expect it to be like Windows, then I quickly become frustrated. If I approach it like a completely new and mostly-unfamiliar operating system, then it's simply something to learn. And that's not a bad analogy, really. It's been a long time since I used a Mac, but I suspect learning Vista is about what it would be for me to learn the current Mac OS.
So I'm happy with it right now. And I think I'm getting the hang of it.
However, they filled Minesweeper with animations and sound. And optional daisies. Fucking Minesweeper, of all things. I play a lot of Minesweeper, and considering the first thing I do with a new computer is sit down for a while and get something in the Best Times for Minesweeper, so you can imagine this annoys me. Where's my happy face? Where are his sunglasses when I win? What did you do with him?
