Yesterday, when I coming back to work after my break, having walked down to the bookstore to browse, I was walking down the block and I heard this terrible sound. Never heard anything quite like it before. Sort of a WHUMP. It was very loud--they heard it about a half block down at the carwash--and it sounded like some sort of impact.
I turned around to see someone in the crosswalk attempting to pick himself up off the road in front of a truck. He stood up, and collapsed as the people in the truck reached him, took him by the arms, and walked him slowly off to the sidewalk and out of the road.
For a while we had an ambulance, a fire truck, and the cops there. I'm guessing that since he was able to stand up (however briefly) and yell angrily at the driver of the truck, he wasn't injured too badly. What it looks like happened is the truck turned left onto 5th Avenue without looking and hit someone in the crosswalk. That's not terribly surprising. That's a terrible road for that. I've had a few close calls crossing it myself.
But you know what spooks me a bit? If I'd left the bookstore about thirty seconds later, or been a bit slower walking back, it would have been me at that crosswalk.
That's sort of a weird thought.
