CHARACTER
NAME: Hideki Hinata
SERIES: Angel Beats!
TIMELINE: End Series
BACKGROUND: Hinata was a baseball player on his school's team in life. During an important game, he missed a fly ball and ruined his team's chance at going to Koushien, a major baseball tournament between the best school baseball clubs. His team blamed him for the loss entirely. Hinata was devastated by his failure, not even remembering the moment he missed the ball. An elder student gave him an unknown drug to take to calm his nerves. There are hints in the scene of Hinata's drug use prior to the scene ('I wish he would get his act together.' 'This is what you need, right?'), but it is hard to say. It is also hard to say if an addiction developed/was already in place at this point. The drug use is not mentioned again in the anime series.
Though it's not mentioned how long afterward, Hinata dies after being hit by a truck. He mentions recalling his last moments of consciousness in the prequel to Angel Beats!. It is then that Hinata wakes up on the 'school grounds' of the Angel Beats! world. After walking to the edge of a building to survey his surroundings, he has his first meeting with Yurippe, who promptly kills him by knocking him off of the building. He awakes again in the infirmary, to Yurippe, who explains the situation to him. Though their relationship starts off rocky, this meeting of two 'humans' is the start of the Afterlife Battlefront (though it will go through numerous names over the course of time before reaching this name).
ABILITIES: Hinata is a plain man. He has no special abilities outside of some wrestling moves and the ability to aim and shoot various kinds of firearms. If this requires any cap,
PERSONALITY: "Hinata is bright, dependable boy who is the closest to Otonashi. He always tries to save his friends if he can and is a reliable force in the team." -- Wikipedia
Hinata is the friendly type. In the SSS, he'll be the first to try and get along with a new member. He probably feels a responsibility in helping new members mesh into the group, as he's one of the two founders, and Yurippe is a bit of an oddity when it comes to social interaction. He exhibits a protectiveness of the group, being one of the 'oldest' members and says on numerous occasions that he has 'friends he still has to help'. When he realizes Otonashi's plans, he immediately decides to join him in helping the others move on.
He's the type to think of others first. When it was just the two of them, despite Yurippe's constant verbal - and sometimes physical - abuse, he decided to stick by her side and protect her. He vowed not to allow her to be alone. He offers to leave before Otonashi, so the other can have his time alone with Kanade. During Otonashi's first mission to the Guild, Hinata puts himself in danger numerous times to protect him.
Despite his kind nature, Hinata is prone to occasionally being a jerk. He likes teasing people, especially Yui and Naoi, and taking playful jabs at people. His teasing is usually in good nature, but he's not above making someone who's being an idiot know just how stupid they are.
Hinata is also the buttmonkey of the series. Along with Noda, he is the one injured most often. He gets hypnotized into crying fits. He gets kicked off the roof of a building. He gets rocket launched into the ceiling. He gets the brunt of Yui's energetic violence. This usually leads to some supremely overdramatic reactions on Hinata's part.
He is a drama king.
He'll wail, cry and yell in anger if things are going insane. He'll jump into loud protests, halt goings on to argue with Yui or Naoi, and gargle in sorrows when he realizes he's doomed to an upcoming fate of extreme pain. His temper can be rather short, especially when dealing with repeat offenders of ticking him off. While being the resident responsible figure, he is also the resident spazz monster, throwing the most fits.
Part of this is due to Hinata being a voice of reason. He thinks rather logically and doesn't hold back his voice when things just aren't making sense. (Why did I get launched when Ooyama messed up?! How is that fair?) (That's not how you play baseball! What's wrong with you?) With most of the SSS being self-proclaimed idiots and slightly off their rockers, he gets driven insane by their ways of thinking time and time again.
Like everyone else, Hinata bears a weight of sadness. He tries to keep it to himself, but can be caught dazing out once in a while, when reminded of his life. He mentions time and again that his life was horrible, which may indicate more problems outside of the baseball game, and he bears it with a sad smile. Somehow, though, this has made him one of the more understanding characters. He can read people fairly well and sympathize with them. He's more than glad to listen and be a support for anyone in the SSS that needs it.
