This is theme 19. Child. I don't know why I have a sudden influx of kid!fic. There'll probs be more upcoming soon XP

Summary: Zindrael knows he should be happy, but he can't stop thinking that something's missing.

There’s a song they play in hell, and it is not one which can be heard by all. It is the song of an unbroken family, loving parents with happy bubbly children on summer picnics, and spring holidays, and Christmas mornings. It is a song of pitter-pattering feet, and winter sniffles, and healing kisses on scraped knees. And it is a song that tears at the hearts of those who can hear it.

Zindrael sighed as he leaned against the balcony railing, staring unseeingly at the red horizon. The song was playing again, soft and insidious, haunting his dreams at night and driving him to distraction during the day.

He nearly jumped out of his feathers as a strong pair of arms wrapped around his waist, careful of his wings as they tugged him back. He relaxed back into the familiar warmth and sighed again as a head dropped to his shoulder. “Relifer.”

“Hello, Zinnie,” was murmured against his cheek.

Zindrael snorted, melancholy momentarily subsiding. Relifer usually drowned out all traces of the song. “Are we really back on these ridiculous nicknames, Reli?”

A wet stripe was licked up his cheek in retaliation. Zindrael spluttered and squirmed away, making sure Relifer got a face-full of wing in the process. He relented with a laugh, folding his wings in and leaning back against the railing so he could face Relifer. “Are you not expected to do actual work during the day?” he asked, laughter softening into a fond smile.

Relifer waved his question away with a careless flick. “What’s the point of being a Duke of Hell if I can’t order other people to do my work for me?”

“Relifer, really,” Zindrael admonished. “As a Duke, you have certain responsibilities and -”

Relifer cut him off with a laugh, pulling him in close. “Yes, yes dear. I assure you it is nothing that actually requires my attention. Even fallen, an angel is still an angel, hmm?” he teased.

Zindrael sniffed delicately. “For the one who tempted me into sin, I would not be so flippant,” he shot back archly. He melted quickly though as Relifer chuckled, nuzzling into the crook of his shoulder, and murmuring nonsense.

Finally, Zindrael pushed him away with a soft laugh, heading into their chambers. “Come now. I am sure there is something you should be doing. Your secretary already dislikes me for being an angel. I would hate to give him actual reason to dislike me, and distracting you from your work surely counts.”

A hand snagged his wrist and tugged him around. “Forget about the work, Zindrael. I have taken care of everything I must for the day.” His brow wrinkled. “I am much more concerned with you, at the moment.”

Zindrael tipped his head to the side, moving closer to Relifer so he could wrap his arms around the demon’s waist. “Me? Why would you be concerned about me?”

Relifer gave him a look, as though he suspected Zindrael was being purposefully obtuse. “I have noticed that you have been somewhat preoccupied these last few days, and it is not for the first time. Is there something which I should be aware of? You know I would that you were happy.” Relifer paused, looking like he was debating continuing. “Unless the reason for your reticence is because I am the one at fault?” He looked at Zindrael worriedly, seeming unaware that he was nervously rubbing his thumb over the same place on the angel’s hip.

Zindrael squeezed Relifer lightly. “Of course not. You could never make me unhappy,” he assured softly.

“And yet I sense you are not entirely happy,” Relifer pressed gently when Zindrael didn’t continue immediately.

The angel sighed, turning to look into the distance. “In heaven, there were places teeming with children,” he started, barely above a whisper. “They laugh, and they cry, and they sing, and they are the most wonderful sounds I have ever heard. And they are sounds which I have not heard since I Fell.”

There was only a moment’s pause before Zindrael snapped to look at Relifer, eyes wide. “I do not regret Falling. There was never a doubt in my mind that it was the right thing for me, when I knew you were there to catch me.” He buried his face in the side of Relifer’s neck with a sigh. “It is only that I miss the children sometimes.”

He could feel Relifer brush a kiss against his temple before pulling back. “Why did you not say something? Surely you know I would gladly give you anything, if it would make you happy.”

Zindrael looked up, taking in the soft smile on Relifer’s face with some surprise. “I did not think there was anything that you would be able to do and…I did not think you would be interested in anything to do with children, especially not when you have so much else to deal with.”

Relifer grinned. “I am interested in anything that you are interested in.” He tipped his head, eyeing Zindrael pensively. “The souls of the very young have of getting lost on their final journey. It seems to me that they could maybe use an angel to guide them back to the right path. What say you?” he asked quietly.

Zindrael’s eyes felt suspiciously misty. “Is that really something that could be done?’

Relifer tugged him close again. “There is very little that cannot be done when one has the favor of a Duke of Hell, and there is nothing that this particular duke would not do for his angel.” Zindrael sank into the embrace, his wings coming up to envelop them, and the song that surrounded him now was a whole new melody.
