“Why can’t we just get married already?” Sakura blurted, her irritation reaching a boiling point. She was frustrated with the man in front of her, and more so at his apparent fear of permanent long term commitment. “I mean - we live as a married couple anyway. Is it me? Because you don’t want to be with me fore...”
She trailed off, seeing the discomfort and tense way her lover was sitting - back straight as a wall (and even more rigid than normal), and hands clenched tightly by his sides. “...Neji?”
“You know it’s not like that.” He spoke through gritted teeth, his voice strained.
A weary sigh escaped Sakura’s lips. “Then what is it, Neji? We’ve been through this so many times. You never give me an answer. Until then, I have no choice but to assume.” Sakura stated, her voice hard. She knew she was being over dramatic and a tad bitchy, but she was really sick of this game they’ve been playing for months now. A wedding wouldn’t be too difficult - his clan would probably take care of everything.
Bright emerald orbs widened at the thought.
His clan. His god forsaken old-fashioned-high-society clan. The clan he’s to lead in a few years time.
“Why didn’t you just tell me?” she whispered, moving to sit next to him on the loveseat in their living room. “Instead of making me go through all these crazy guesses?”
“I was trying to find an alternative.” He replied, the tension easing away slightly at her proximity. “There has to be a loophole somewhere.”
“Neji...” her small hand moved out to pull him into a hug. “Why are you so dumb?”
He stayed limp in her arms, not in the mood for her teasing. “All you’re worried about is me not being able to be a kunoichi anymore if we get married, right?”
He nodded slightly, pulling free from her embrace. “Why are you so casual about this?”
“Oh, Kami.” She grinned, the previous displeasure completely flushed out of her system. “I can’t believe it took me two months to figure out the problem. And I can’t believe that you, even after two months, didn’t think of this alternative. I guess people just don’t think right when all these negative emotions get in the way.” She practically sung out, jumping from the seat to the kitchen.
“What are you talking about?”
“Oh, Neji,” she chirped, dumping the contents of the teapot into a small cup. “I’m Sakura. Have you forgotten? I’m Tsunade’s apprentice. Our Hokage’s.” She paused, waiting for him to catch on. When his blank orbs widened ever so slightly, she spoke. “Tsunade would never let me become a Hyuuga housewife. No matter how powerful Hiashi, or your clan elders are, they can’t just lock me up in the compound. Tsunade would never allow it.”
He blinked at her. “Plus, I’m just too invaluable to Konoha to lock up.” She teased, walking back to the living room. It took Neji all of three seconds to get over the shock at his own stupidity and turned to look at her.
“Since you’ve so kindly pointed out the alternative I’ve been looking for for two months,” he smirked back, inwardly overjoyed at the prospect that they could actually get married. “Then I guess there’s no reason to not get married anymore.”
And then, there was one (more Hyuuga, that is).
