She would never forget those words. Those distant yet close, mumbled, then with a clear throat - I love you - those were the unforgettable syllables of a girl’s dream. His was a confession unpracticed and uncomfortable, completely out of his element and equally as necessary. His words stumbled and tripped until the usually cool and composed man could only offer a jumbled mess of words that only a girl equally enamoured would be able to understand.
Most of all, though, she would never forget his simple words because of how absolutely unexpected and because of how, in the barest of senses, inappropriate they had been. The sun raged at a steady forty degrees Celsius, helped along by the humidity and pollution as they stood, bare naked and exposed towards each other, barely understanding the world but somehow, understanding each other so fully.
“I love you,” he said, once, stubbornly, with his customary frown. She wanted to frown too, because what boy said I love you with a frown? But she also wanted to laugh and smile, because those words were so, so precious.
When she didn’t reply immediately, he repeated, once more, “I love you.” This time with more urgency, with more emotion, with more feeling. She wanted to laugh again - he was such an impatient one - but the thought hadn’t even been processed before he surged forward, gathering her all into his arms. His grip was tight, squeezing her, sure to leave bruises later - he was always somewhat careless when it came to her - as he said, again and again, “Didn’t you hear me? I said I love you.” The last time his tone was accusatory, as if daring her to not repeat his words.
She knew better though - she knew that that was just his deep, hidden, pocketed insecurities. She blew a tiny kiss at him, all warm smiles and affection. “Of course, Sasuke-kun. Are you silly? I also love, love, love you.”
His tense shoulders relaxed, and her smile broadened. She let out all of her pent up laughter, and even he eventually let out a small, crooked smile. The tiny pink haired girl threw her arms around her lifeline, until they were twirling, dancing, cheering and loving in a flurry of cerise and ebony, revelling in each other’s radiance.
To them, it didn’t matter that they were only six years old - they had the entire world at their feet, and an entire lifetime ahead of them.
