So quiet and peaceful
Tranquil and blissful
There's a kind of magic in the air
What a truly magnificent view
A breathtaking scene
With the dreams of the world
In the palm of your hand
Rose looked out on the valley and grinned, her breath making little puffs in the air. “It’s beautiful,” she murmured, wrapping her arms around her waist and jumping up and down a little bit in an attempt to keep warm. “Three thousand years in the future and what, four galaxies away?”
She looked to the Doctor for confirmation and he grinned down at her. “Six galaxies.”
She just laughed and unwrapped her arms from around herself and latched onto the Doctor’s leather clad arm. “Six galaxies then, and they’re still celebrating Christmas. Seriously?”
He chuckled. “Seriously! It’s even bigger on this planet than it was on Earth. Each village goes all out in decorating and they all compete to see which one has the best display.” He nodded down to the village below them. “This one’s the winner this year.”
Her tongue snuck out of her mouth as she grinned up at him. “If you’ve landed right.”
He managed to look affronted. “I always land right.”
Rose giggled and leaned her head against his shoulder. “Right, so then, bringing me back a year after you took me was on purpose, as was Christmas in Cardiff, oh and then there was that time-“
The Doctor bumped her shoulder. “Alright then, you. Enough.” Her only reply was another smile. “I’ll have you know that I landed perfectly this time. Figured I’d give you a nice quiet Christmas after the last one we had.”
She grinned up at him adoringly. “Thanks. I love it. Really…although I’m half expecting some sort of evil snow creature to pop up behind us…just the way things work with you.” Suddenly, her gaze fixed on something behind him and her eyes widened in horror. The Doctor spun around quickly, ready to defend Rose, only to find nothing there. He turned back around to his young companion, who was nearly doubled over with laughter. “I got you!” she cackled.
He rolled his eyes, but couldn’t help the indulgent grin that came over his face. She had a tendency to do that, make him smile. It was a strange feeling, especially in this body, but one that he was slowly getting used to. She’d been with him probably about six months and they had just dropped Adam back home. He figured that they could use a little break, just the two of them.
She finally calmed herself and latched herself onto his arm again, shivering. “Don’t you get cold?” she asked.
“Nope. Can regulate my body temperature better than humans, me,” he told her, preening a little bit. She just shook her head and giggled a little bit. She then turned back to the village, a bright grin lighting up her face again.
“It sort of reminds me of Whoville, you know? From The Grinch Who Stole Christmas?” she said and he couldn’t help but chuckle. His little ape was so clever.
“That’s because it is. It’s where Dr. Seuss got his inspiration from.” With that, Rose turned to him, her mouth open wide.
“What? Are you telling me that Dr. Seuss was an alien? Did you know him?” Her eyes were wide too, along with her gaping mouth. He couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Ran into him a few times. Gave him a lift once too. Nice bloke. His species only spoke in rhyme, which explains a lot I suppose. Helped him get settled on Earth.” She looked up at him adoringly and he knew that he could never get tired of this, of her. He turned back to the village. Seeing the universe through her eyes had given him a new lease on life.
He was so lost in his own thoughts and the sight of the village that he didn’t even notice that Rose had slipped away from him, until he felt something wet hit the back of his neck and slide down, underneath his jacket and jumper. He jumped and let loose what was definitely not a girlie scream and spun around to see Rose Tyler, looking absolutely devious, with a snowball in her mitten covered hand.
She grinned at him and he growled playfully before launching after her. She shrieked and tried to throw the snowball at him, but ended up missing terribly. They played in the snow for awhile, tossing it at one another, before the Doctor finally grabbed her around the waist and tackled her into a large drift of snow, falling down on top of her. He shifted his weight so that he wasn’t fully lying on top of her, but he didn’t move off completely.
Rose’s breath caught as she realized what was going on. “So…” she murmured, “do they have mistletoe on this planet?”
“Yeah, they do,” he answered simply, before looking up at the tree they had landed under. He couldn’t help but to laugh when he saw what it was. “Comes from what they call a Vendlaleaf tree…happens to be what we’re lying under.” Rose looked up and grinned.
The Doctor kept his focus on her face, watching as snowflakes fell onto her cheeks and melted, watching the little puffs of air coming from her mouth. Her gaze turned away from the tree and back to him, and she grinned his favourite grin, where her tongue wrapped around her teeth and her eyes held that wicked gleam. “So we gonna follow tradition then?”
He smirked and even though his brain was screaming at least a thousand reasons why he shouldn’t be doing this, he leaned down and gently touched his lips to hers. He could feel her grin as she arched up slightly, seeking more contact with him. They kept the kiss chaste but it was so much more intimate than any contact that they’d had before. When they broke apart, she smiled up at him, her eyes sparkling. And everything in the world was right.
And then he noticed that she was shivering beneath him and he immediately cursed himself. He quickly got up off her, pulling her up with him. He held her tightly against him, even though he knew that he didn’t offer much in the warmth department. She snuggled deeper into his embrace, pushing her face into the scratchy wool of his jumper. Her shivering subsided slightly, but he knew that he should get her back to the TARDIS soon. Staying out in the cold with wet clothes wasn’t the best thing for humans.
But he found it hard to move. Everything was so still, so perfect, that he never wanted the moment to end. By the soft, happy noises she was making in the back of her throat, he could tell that she didn’t want it to end either. And he felt like his hearts could burst with love for her.
“C’mon, Rose, we should go. I think there’s a nice warm cuppa waiting in the TARDIS with your name on it,” he murmured into her hair. She laughed and looked up at him.
“I wish that we could stay here forever,” Rose whispered, her eyes sparkling.
“Me too,” he replied, bringing a hand up to smooth down her hair. “But all this cold isn’t good for your little fragile human body.”
She just laughed and pushed lightly against his chest. “Oi! Shut up!” He chuckled and finally drew away reluctantly, but grabbed her hand and tugged her along, down the hill and towards the TARDIS. He was searching through his pockets when they reached the door, a task that would have been much easier if he had use of both of his hands, but he absolutely refused to let go of Rose’s hand. She wrapped an arm around his elbow and leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder as he finally found the key and pushed his way inside, with her clinging to his arm.
He went to go set the controls to send them into the Vortex when he noticed Rose staring at him. “What?” he asked absently, looking down and concentrating on the knobs and levers in front of him.
He glanced up in time to see her grin and shake her head. “Nothing….just...” He raised an eyebrow quizzically and she just shrugged, that brilliant grin never leaving her face. “Still better with two.” With that, she turned around and retreated into the TARDIS, surely to change out of her cold weather clothes and into something more comfortable.
He wanted to reply, “No, just better with you,” but settled for just setting the coordinates to the Vortex with a dumb grin on his face.
