The Borgias 2x09: In which terrible people die and I feel oddly conflicted about it.
If only because the guy who plays Savanarola and David Oakes were just so good and I am going to miss them terribly (I know Savanarola isn't dead yet but c'mon, he's in Rome, in the clutches of the Family Inquisition- it's all a matter of time).
I thought Juan was amazing in this episode- utterly despicable and depraved and tormented and completely hurting inside, realizing that his life is circling the drain, so he may as well hurt as many feelings and destroy as many lives while he can. He's already a syphilis-riddled opium addict, all of Rome is laughing at him because of his cowardly show at Forli- might as well verbally degrade his mother, attempt to drop his nephew from a balcony, and rape a random chick while he's at it (and in all likelihood, give that poor girl a bad case of the pox in the process). So really what has the guy left to lose? At this point, he must know death can only be an improvement- from screw-up black sheep to dead sainted son, he'll never live to see his father disappointed in him.
But when he and Cesare are on the bridge of doom, I was hurting for the guy. He's just so pathetic at this point, it feels excessive to keep hating on him because either way, he is epically fucked. Even if Cesare didn't gut him and throw him in the river, mafia-style, that guy was living on borrowed time.
And Savanarola, ya the guy had people burned to death and he just needs to die horribly. But when he went through his trial by fire, I actually felt a little sorry for him because it looks like he actually thought he was going to pass this 'test', because...you know....God....righteous fury....something...amirite?
Also, Lucrezia? I love the girl, but she is kind of a bitch these days. I don't think she means to be but dear God, she broke two guys hearts (or in the case of her fiance, hurt his ego at least), did some serious collateral damage on their sibling bond and it's more like, DON'T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME!!! Now let's baptize my baby just in case his crazy crazier uncle, the junkie who hates bastards and rapes virgins, tries to play babysitter Michael Jackson-style.
Oh and Juan totally sees the Lucrezia-Cesare incest vibes. And if he sees it, that must mean other people, i.e. everyone else with eyes sees it too and is totally just: 'I'm going to pretend that these two kids are abnormally infatuated with each other.' I mean, look at them during the dance, the way Lucrezia waves at Cesare from across the balcony and he just waves back like some junior high kid at prom. And she makes him the godfather of her child because he has to be the something-father of at least one of her children.
And he only takes the Juan-offensive to murder levels when it looks like Juan may actually be a threat to Lucrezia and her baby. He doesn't care if his father or mother will hate him (I doubt Vanozza will though, she seemed pretty disgusted by Juan towards the end anyways)- Lucrezia has and always will matter more to him than anything else. To hell with flesh and blood and eternal damnation, as long as Lucrezia loves him, it's all good.
Hmm, maybe her engagement to Alfonso will look like some sort of divine retribution to him. He committed this awful crime for her, damned himself in the eyes of his father and God, and then she gets taken away like some sort of punishment. Not just physically taken away but emotionally too because from the previews, she looks pretty stoked to be getting engaged to yet another Djem clone. And considering all that he's done for her, from murdering her husband, committing fratricide, then to have her turn away from him for some fresh strange? Yeah, he's probably not going to take that lying down. I only hope that Alfonso's got the cajones to go toe to toe with Il Valentino; it'd be nice to see Cesare have to actually fight for Lucrezia's love.
In conclusion, next week is this:
Because after this ep...she does kinda owe him.
