The Borgias 2x08: this family continues to be screwed
Rodrigo. Its hard for me to see him as anything other than a flawed, misguided but ultimately good person when between him and his two Cardinals, he's the only who's not laughing in glee when he hears about the death of one of his enemies and actually scolds the other two for being assholes over someone's death.
Oh Lucrezia, I understand that when it comes to arranged marriages, you tend to get the short end of the marital abuse stick and that getting engaged to one guy and banging his brother is just your way of having both slices of cake and eating it too. But has it ever occurred to you that maybe your bit on the side wouldn't appreciate being the other man, especially when it concerns his brother and the girl he's engaged to.
I did like Vanozza laying down some tough life lessons a' la desert as metaphor with Vanozza telling her that as a Borgia, she can have whatever or whoever she wants and that some part of Lucrezia is still trying to hold on to what's left of her romantic ideals. To any one else, what's selfish and indulgent is just pragmatism and the privilege of power on Planet Borgia. Just look at her father, Cesare, Juan- infidelity and and promiscuity are almost to be expected. In a perfect world, she would be free to wed someone she was actually compatible with. But in a perfect world, that person in all likelihood would have been her brother, so so much for perfect worlds. Here, she's a bird in a gilded cage. Her latest conquest wasn't the first, he won't be the last, and she knows deep down that this fling is just something to sweeten the pill of another loveless marriage.
But enough of Lucrezia, how about that Juan and his encroaching, syphilis-ridden insanity? I actually feel sorry for him at this point. He's a screw-up, everyone knows he's a screw-up, he's probably thinking "Well, I'm boned anyways, might as well take as many people down with me as I can at this point." I loved the scene where Rodrigo, Cesare, and Juan are sitting in front of the fireplace and Juan is looking like death warmed over while Cesare beams in his own STD-free superiority. All he really has is his title as general and without those, he's just the useless black sheep, so I really do believe he would kill himself if he lost that.
Anyways, it looks like my previous theory concerning the reason why Juan gets offed (it's not a spoiler if you read the history books) is because he threatens Lucrezia actually looks like it comes true in next week's episode. Which..a part of me hopes doesn't happen because despite the unsavory characterization and bad hair, David Oakes is really good looking and a great actor. It would be a shame to see him go.
