The West Wing: Season 3 Unpopular Opinions

Oct 29, 2015 12:34

Here are my unpopular opinions for The West Wing S3. I'm gearing up for Mad Men Season 4 UOs- because I know that's going to be a monster-post. This one is pretty short and sweet...by my standards.

If I cook the stuffing inside the turkey, is there a chance I could kill my guests? I'm not saying that's necessarily a deal-breaker. )

I love Amy too! She's brilliant.

I actually agree with Donna's point BUT I also think the lack of sympathy for Abby was bollocks. She broke laws that are there for good reason, whereas I think it's debatable that Jed should be expected to reveal his medical details to the public. But yeah, she got stuck with a lot of the anger/lack of sympathy that a lot of the staff couldn't or wouldn't give Jed.

Isaac and Ishmael is not my favourite, but yeah, Leo being that brand of racist is completely believable and I really like it. Particularly "that's the price you pay" / "the price for what?"

I really feel for Abbey. Jed decided to pursue his dream to run for President and keep his MS secret, with all of the stress and travel and being away from his primary physician in New Hampshire. Abbey broke rules for physicians because she wanted to give Jed the best medical care possible, given his choices. However, the motor for the deception and rule-breaking, was Jed. However, Abbey was the only one to suffer real career consequences. And yeah, I'm not necessarily saying that Jed should have suffered more consequences than he did. I think House Republicans over-humiliated him and his staff. Then Americans made an informed (and correct) choice that Jed's MS isn't as debilitating to an effective presidency as Ritchie's stupidity. However, poor Abbey deserved sympathy ( ... )

*nodnod* I definitely agree with all that. Man, when she says her career got "eaten"... this is why even though I agree with Donna's point, I also agree with you that when Abbey was so vulnerable it really sucked for Donna to say that.

YES. EXACTLY. Like, it's so Leo and then he gets the wind taken out of his sails as he's forced to try to articulate what that statement actually means. And I really like "way to be back at your desk" as well, as well as the kind of grimace-smile the guy gives in return. He'll go back to work, which is the only way he'll overcome the handicap of being Arab American in politics, but it's hardly the last time something like this will happen.

Yes to all of this. Abbey's unbelievably impressive medical career *was* eaten. Not just from this, but from Abbey having to be known as "Mrs. Bartlet" because it was more "approachable" than "Dr. Bartlet." I know that there are broader considerations that go into crafting policy than Abbey's opinions, but she (and Ellie) still worked as a stand-in for the general principle that doctor's informed scientific opinions are degraded for political reasons. Like forbidding doctors from informing women of abortion options, even if it's medically advisable as a condition to foreign aid or barring funding to Ellie's lab because it's focused on finding a virus for HPV when SOME politicians would just prefer to let the virus continue to "punish" women for having sex ( ... )
